An accomplished figure in the field of engineering, Mr. Williams has accrued more than 35 years of professional excellence in his areas of expertise. He is a former staff engineer of advanced mechanical technology with the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corp. from 1986 to 1987, having previously served the corporation as supervisor of product development, senior project engineer, and project engineer from 1955 and 1986. He began his career as a junior engineer and project engineer with Baldwin-Lima Hamilton Corp. from 1950 to 1955.
To prepare for his lauded career, Mr. Williams first sought out a formal education, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1948 and a Master of Science in diesel engineering in 1950 from North Carolina State University. He subsequently completed postgraduate courses in the Institute of Management at Benedictine University in 1977. Mr. Williams is a registered professional engineer in the state of Illinois.
Alongside his professional endeavors, Mr. Williams has lent his time to a number of civic engagements, including as a trustee of the Downers Grove Sanitary District of Illinois from 1965 to 1992, also serving as president and vice president from 1974 and 1991. In addition, he was a member of the statewide policy advisory committee for the Illinois chapter of the Environmental Protection Agency from 1977 to 1979, a member of the DuPage County Intergovernmental Task Force Committee from 1988 to 1992, and an elder of the Presbyterian Church in 1945.
A contributor of several articles to professional journals, Mr. Williams has maintained affiliation with a number of industry-related organizations, including as a life fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, lifetime member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, lifetime member of the Masons, honorary member of the Illinois Association of Wastewater Agencies, president of Raleigh chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution,, and member of Rho Chapter Sigma Pi.
In celebration of his achievements, Mr. Williams has been awarded several honors and accolades throughout his career. A patentee in the field, Mr. Williams invented an engine overspeed device that withstood all vibrations without it turning off the engine, and he conducted the world's first gas-burning locomotive in revenue service. He was the recipient of the Trustee Service Award from the Illinois Association Sanitary Districts in 1986, a Citizens Award from Downers Grove Evening Chapter in 1991, and a Norfolk Southern R.R. Fellow in 1950.
