With more than 60 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Vaughan has worked as an independent consultant since 2015, assessing atmospheric conditions associated with insurance claims and interacting with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on technical standards and aerospace meteorology-related matters. Additionally, he has been a NASA Emeritus for the Marshall Space Flight Center and a Docent with the U.S. Space and Rocket Center since 2015. Prior to this position, Dr. Vaughan has served the University of Alabama in Huntsville as a research professor in atmospheric sciences from 1986 to 2015 and research institute director from 1986 to 1994.
Previously, Dr. Vaughan held active roles at the Marshall Space Flight Center with NASA, such as chief of the atmospheric science division from 1976 to 1986 and chief of the aerospace environment division from 1960 to 1976. From 1958 to 1960, he worked as a scientific assistant for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency. Dr. Vaughan began his career as a scientific assistant for the Air Force Armament Center at the Elgin Air Force Base for the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Vaughan pursued an education at the University of Florida, earning a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in 1951. He followed this accomplishment with a graduate certificate from the Air Force Institute of Technology and Florida State University in 1952. He concluded his studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering science in 1976. Furthermore, Dr. Vaughan became certified as a consulting meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Vaughan has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A charter member for the Federal Senior Executive Service in 1979, he was on the advisory committee for the National and International Science, Space and Technology Committee. He has found further success with written works as well, holding the positions of associate editor for the Journal of Advanced Technology and Management and contributing author for such journals as the Journal of Aerospace Technology and Management, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, the Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres, and the Journal of Environmental Sciences. Most recently, Dr. Vaughan was published in the Aeronautics and Aerospace Open Access Journal in 2018, and is currently co-authoring a book "Atmospheric Terrestrial Environment Research, Philosophy, and Examples used in the Design and Development of Aerospace Vehicles" with Dale L. Johnson.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Vaughan remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He maintained involvement with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, participating on their Standard Executive Council, Atmospheric and Space Environment Technology Committee, Space Operations Technology Committee, and Management Technology Committee. He has also contributed to the Aviation, Range and Aerospace Meteorology Technology Committee with the American Meteorological Society and the Space System Technology Committee with the International Organization for Standardization. Moreover, he was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the Standards Engineering Society and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. In 1951, Dr. Vaughan enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving to the rank of Captain until his honorable discharge in 1962.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Vaughan has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A fellow of the American Meteorological Society, he was presented with the Exceptional Service Medal from NASA in 1971, as well as the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 2015. Likewise, he was recognized as a fellow by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which subsequently honored him with a Losey Atmospheric Sciences Award in 1980, an Excellence in Aerospace Standards Award in 2003, and Distinguished Service Award in 2007. He was elected to the Hall of Fame, Auburndale High School. Dr. Vaughan has been selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World. He has authored or co-authored over 90 technical reports, conference papers and journal articles.
