Lauded as an expert in biofuels, bio-derived materials, organic chemistry and renewable energy, Dr. Ragauskas is thriving as a Governor's Chair in Biorefining at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in addition to his role as a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and the Center for Renewable Carbon at UT Institute of Agriculture's Department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries. He also serves an integral role in the US Energy and Environmental Sciences Directorate, Biosciences Division, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and as a member of the US Department of Energy's Center for BioEnergy Innovation (CBI).

His primary goal is to research innovative and sustainable biorefining technologies, as well as to guide and mentor future generations through their related research projects. His work focuses on converting plant matter into biofuels bio-derived materials and chemicals for a variety of practical uses.

Prior to this position, Dr. Ragauskas was a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology, an assistant, associate, and full professor at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology, a research associate at the National Research Council, and a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University and the University of Alberta. He also held the first Fulbright Chair in Alternative Energy. Throughout his studies, he has founded and patented ideas for a novel fibro-biotic bacterium isolate, methods and compositions for papermaking and surface-modified fillers for papers, methods and compositions for metal-substituted xerogels to improve peroxide bleaching of kraft pulps, and methods for reducing fluorescence in paper-containing samples.

Outside of academia, Dr. Ragauskas shares his knowledge through publications, advisory boards, and review panels. He has authored and co-authored two books, 21 book chapters, and more than 420 peer-reviewed articles, including his most recent article, "The nature of hololignin." Additionally, he is the associate editor for journals such as Industrial Biotechnology, the Taiwan Journal of Forest Service, TAPPI J., and Holzforschung, and has been on the boards of the Austrian Science Fund, the European Commission Research Directorate, the National Science Academy, and the TAPPI Research Management Committee.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Ragauskas has earned numerous awards, including the Green Process Engineering award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, ACS Award for Affordable Green Chemistry, the TAPPI Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award, and the William H. Aiken Research Prize, and was selected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Academy of Wood Science, and TAPPI. He was further honored with inclusion in three editions of Who's Who in America, including Who's Who in Science and Engineering. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario. When Dr. Ragauskas has free time, he enjoys hiking, fishing, biking, golfing, playing chess, and spending time with his family.
