A celebrated figure in ecology, mammalogy, and conservation science, Dr. Lidicker has accrued more than 60 years of professional excellence in his field. Currently he is a professor of integrative biology and curator of mammals emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He began his tenure at Berkeley in 1957 as instructor in zoology and assistant curator of mammals (Museum of Vertebrate Zoology). He was assistant professor of zoology 1959 to 1965, associate professor and associate curator 1965 to 1969, and professor and curator 1969 to 1989. In 1989 his department became integrative biology and he was professor and curator from 1989 to retirement in 1994 (recalled to active duty 1995 to 1998, 2000, 2003-2003). He was also vice chairman of zoology in 1966 to 1967 and 1981 to 1983. From 1974 to 1975 he served as acting director of the MVZ and as associate director from 1968 to 1981.

As a youngster, Dr. Lidicker enjoyed camping with the Boy Scouts of America and doing outdoor activities. He became inspired by nature and had a desire to delve into his passion as a career. To prepare for his lauded career, Dr. Lidicker sought out a formal education, first obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in 1953, followed by a Masters of Science (1954) and Doctor of Philosophy (1957), both in Zoology, University of Illinois.

An active member of his community, Dr. Lidicker has been a regular contributor of articles to professional journals, and has held a number of professional engagements, including acting as a board director for the Northern California Committee for Environmental Information from 1969 to 1977, a board trustee for BIOSIS from 1987 to 1992, and chair of the Rodent Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission with the International Union for Conservation of Nature from 1980 to 1989. He has further been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Marine World Foundation at Marine World Africa USA from 1987 to 1998. He served as President of the American Society of Mammalogists 1976 to 1978, as board director 1967 to 2018, received their C. Hart Merriam award in 1986, and Honorary Membership in 1995. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2000.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Lidicker has maintained affiliation with several organizations. He is a member and lifetime fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, and a member of the American Society of Mammalogists, the American Society of Naturalists, the Ecological Society of America, the British Ecological Society, the Australian Mammal Society, the Society for Conservation Biology, and Sigma Xi. He is also a lifetime member of the American Ornithologist's Union.

Dr. Lidicker married Louise DeLonzor in 1989; he has two children, Jeffrey Roger and Kenneth Paul. In his spare time, he enjoys folk dancing and contributing to such associations as the Berkeley Folk Dancers club and the National Folk Organization. He was formerly a dancer for the Westwind International Folk Ensemble from 1994 to 2000, as well as the Jubilee America Dance Theater from 1999 to 2014. In 2016 the National Folk Organization awarded him their Preserving Our Heritage Award for Lifetime of Work and Achievement in Folk Dance and Folk Arts.
