Dr. Noone has been tending to patients for more than 45 years, providing exceptional service on the Main Line and in the Greater Philadelphia area as a board-certified plastic surgeon by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Instrumental in introducing the early concepts and techniques of breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy, a pioneering concept in the late 1970s that has become a standard of care for breast cancer patients, Dr. Noone formerly served as the chief of plastic surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, Bryn Mawr Hospital and Lankenau Hospital and was the chair of the Department of Surgery at Bryn Mawr Hospital from 1991 to 2001. A longtime Clinical Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania throughout his career he also directed the residency affiliation between Penn and Main Line Health hospitals in plastic surgery.
Lending his expertise as the director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery from 1988 to 1994 and as the first executive director of the board from 1997 through 2015, Dr. Noone also served on the board of directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties, is past chair of the board of trustees of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, former board of directors and president of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation and former president of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. A member of several other professional organizations, Dr. Noone was the founder and third president of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons. He served four years on the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Noone was honored with an Achievement Award in 2012 from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for his contributions to plastic surgery. He received a Distinguished Fellow Award from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons in 2013 and the Association's highest honor, The Honorary Fellow Award, in the same year. Furthermore, he received a Frank J. O'Hara Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Scranton in 1986, a Magee-Woodruff Award from the Bryn Mawr Hospital in 2005, and The Noone Lecture, an endowed lecture in his name, at the American Association of Plastic Surgeons.
During his tenure, Dr. Noone has contributed more than 100 articles to scientific publications, including peer-reviewed articles. He also is the author of two books, "Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Breast" and "75 Years of Growth in the Public Trust: The American Board of Plastic Surgery 1937-2012."
Earning a Bachelor of Science at the University of Scranton in 1961 and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1965, Dr. Noone spent one year as a rotating intern, followed by five years as a resident in surgery and two years as a resident in plastic surgery at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. He also spent two years as a captain in the U.S. Air Force in general surgical service during the Vietnam War.
Locally involved, Dr. Noone spent time on the board of directors and as trustee of the Rosemont School of the Holy Child in Pennsylvania and was vice chair of trustees of the University of Scranton. He is active with the Merion Cricket Club and the Eagles Mere (PA) Country Club. Married to his wife Barbara Ellen Atkins Noone since 1965, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is a registered nurse, Dr. Noone is the father of five children and 13 grandchildren.
