Dr. Valsaraj has been serving as the vice president for research and economic development at Louisiana State University (LSU) for the past three years. Formerly serving as a professor in the Cain Department of Chemical Engineering, department chair and associate vice chancellor for research and economic development, he holds the titles of Charles and Hilda Roddey Distinguished Professor in chemical engineering and Ike East Professor in chemical engineering. Employed at LSU since 1986, Dr. Valsaraj was an affiliate faculty member at the University of Arkansas between 1983 and 1986.
Holding patents for innovative groundwater treatment and subsurface NAPL treatment, Dr. Valsaraj's research areas include environmental chemical engineering with broad research experience in water treatment, atmospheric chemistry and modeling the fate and transport of contaminants in four environmental media, which includes air, water, soil and sediment. His current research is concerned with the transformations of pollutants on atmospheric aerosols, mercury sequestration in sediments and high pressure and low temperature phase equilibrium studies of relevance to the sub-sea oil and gas spills.
Dr. Valsaraj has served as a consultant, providing his expert opinion to various industries, as well as state and federal agencies, has been a member of the panel of directors in separations for the National Science Foundation and has served as a presenter in his field numerous times. The author of the book "Elements of Environmental Engineering: Thermodynamics and Kinetics," which was rereleased several times, and the book "Principles of Environmental Thermodynamics and Kinetics" in 2018, he has also authored and co-authored approximately 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and nearly 30 book chapters throughout his career. Dr. Valsaraj is a longtime member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society and the National Geographic Society, and he is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and National Academy of Inventors.
Receiving multiple grants for his research from such organizations as the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Defense since 1986, Dr. Valsaraj first received a Master of Science in chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India, in 1980. Immigrating to the United States that same year, he then earned a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry with a minor in chemical engineering at Vanderbilt University in 1983. Married to his wife Nisha Valsaraj since 1990 with two children, Dr. Valsaraj has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
