A Professor of Art, Emeritus since 2016, Mr. Aurbach began his affiliation with Vanderbilt University in 1986. Prior to joining the faculty at Vanderbilt, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Hamilton College and an Assistant Professor at Eastern Illinois University. Teaching sculpture and drawing, he has also lectured on his own work at more than 250 universities and cultural institutions.
Throughout his career Mr. Aurbach's artwork has addressed issues related to death, identity, administrative folly, and critiques of academic methods like Critical Theory. His work has been included in several major textbooks and reviewed in such publications as Sculpture, Leonardo, World Sculpture News, Metalsmith and Art Papers. Over the last three decades his work has been included in more than 80 solo exhibitions at universities, museums and galleries throughout the United States, such as the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in New York, the Artemisia Gallery in Chicago, and the Indianapolis Art Center. Following a national competition, his work was selected for the inaugural solo exhibition of contemporary art at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville in 2001 (renamed the Frist Art Museum in 2018).
During his tenure, Mr. Aurbach received multiple grants from Vanderbilt and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other organizations. Some of the more recent grants have included a Professional Development Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission in 2014, a Barbara Ritzman Devereux Artist Grant from the University of North Florida in 2013, and a Faculty Development/Research Scholar grant from Vanderbilt in 2012. Mr. Aurbach was also a recipient of a Puffin Foundation Grant in 2002 and two Art Matters Inc. Fellowships a decade earlier. Other honors include an Alumni Freshman Adviser Award from Vanderbilt in 1997, a Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement in 1995 and their President's Award for Exemplary Achievement in 2015.
A past president of the College Art Association, the world's largest organization of visual arts professionals, where he also served in multiple other capacities, Mr. Aurbach is also a former board director of the SECAC, a charter board member of the Tennessee Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and board director of the Mid-America College Art Association.
Mr. Aurbach received a Bachelor of Arts in biology, a Bachelor of Science in journalism, a Master of Arts in art history, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art at the University of Kansas in 1974, 1976, 1979, and 1981 respectively. He then completed a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture at Southern Methodist University in 1983. He has been showcased in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
