A neuroscientist and anesthesiologist, Dr. Roginski is currently an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the department of anesthesiology and critical care in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. First hired as an assistant professor in 2002, he has since taken on his new title in 2009. He has also been a staff anesthesiologist for the Philadelphia VA Medical Center since 2009.
Dr. Roginski's research focuses on perioperative neuroprotection and neurodegenerative diseases, including autism. His anesthesia interests include invasive neuroradiology; cardiology; ear, nose and throat; urologic surgery; day surgery; and resident teaching. He formerly taught at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the department of anesthesia for 11 years, where he discovered and mapped a pair of glutamate receptor-like genes in humans, which he and his colleagues have also found in rats and mice. Dr. Roginski continues to investigate the function of these genes and their role in neuroprotection and autism. He also spent a few years teaching as an instructor in the department of neuroscience at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University.
Dr. Roginski's research has been supported with funding from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, the American Cancer Society, the National Science Foundation, the Foundation for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and the New Jersey Governor's Council on Autism. One of his proudest accomplishments has included discovering and working on a gene in 1998 called GCOM1, which won him an award. The gene is involved in the brain, the heart and RNA transcription. His most recent publication about the interactions of the GCOM1 gene with the NMDA receptor and internexin-α was published in February of this year in the journal Gene. Dr. Roginski has also received multiple other awards throughout his career, including a Faculty Award by The Foundation of UMDNJ, a Research Award from the department of anesthesia at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, an Anesthesiology Young Investigator Award from the Foundation for Anesthesia, Education and Research, and a Pilot Grant from the Veterans Administration Region 4.
A former staff anesthesiologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania between 2002 and 2009, Dr. Roginski worked in the same capacity at Robert Wood Johnson Surgery Center between 2001 and 2002, the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital of New Brunswick between 1991 and 2002, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey between 1997 and 1999 and at the University Hospital in Newark, NJ, between 1989 and 1991. Furthermore, he has participated in resident teaching in clinical settings at affiliated hospitals of the UMDNJ for 10 years until 2002.
Contributing dozens of articles in various scientific and medical journals during his career, including Cell, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Anesthesiology Clinics of North America, the Journal of Neuroscience and the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, Dr. Roginski has also served as a reviewer and contributing author for various publications and has been an invited speaker at annual meetings of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and other organizations. A longstanding member of various professional societies, including the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Societies of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care (now the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care), the Society for Neuroscience, and the International Anesthesia Research Society, among others, Dr. Roginski has been active on many committees and subcommittees.
Receiving a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, Dr. Roginski then pursued a second master's degree, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by an internship and residency in anesthesiology at Albert Einstein Affiliated Hospitals in the Bronx, NY. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is licensed to practice in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and formerly in New York. Married to Sharon Claire Krieger since 1988 with three children, Dr. Roginski has been showcased in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
