Today, he excels as the president of the Osaka City University Medical Research Foundation, a role he has held since 1999. In total, he has been with the university since 1957, serving in positions with increasing responsibility over time. He began his tenure completing his medical internship and residency at the Osaka City Medical Center, transitioning to an academic role as an instructor for the department of otolaryngology in 1963. Later, he advanced to assistant professor, and then professor and department chair.
When asked of his success, Dr. Nakai credits his passion for helping others and his strong interest in the medical field. Outside of his professional work, he has taken on career-related projects to further make an impact his field. Notably, he was a research associate for the department of otolaryngology at Yale University School of Medicine and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Nakai has also authored medical texts including the "Textbook of Otorhinolaryngology," "Meniere's Disease," and "Case Study of Otorhinolaryngology." He also edited "Keys for Vertigo Treatment."
Considered an expert in his field, Dr. Nakai maintains affiliation with a number of professional organizations. He is a former president of the Japan Ear Society, former chairman of the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Standing Committee of the International Federation of Otolaryngology Societies, and former president of the Otorhinolaryngology Society of Japan, the Japan Equilibrium Society, the Japan Society of Audiology, a member of the Research Association of Otolaryngology, and the Barany Society. Dr. Nakai was the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize from the International Federation of Otolaryngology Societies in 1985. He was also featured in Who's Who in Asia twice and Who's Who in the World five times.
