Investment company executive David Tendler has been a partner of Tendler Beretz L.L.C., an international consulting firm, since 1985. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Blood Center since 1987, and just recently vacated his post as chairman (May 2017 to May 2018). Additionally, Mr. Tendler has served as a member of the Advisory Council for the Weissman Center for International Business at Baruch College since 2000.
Born in 1938, Mr. Tendler graduated from City College of New York with a BBA Degree in 1959 and served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1960. He then joined Philipp Brothers, an international commodity trading firm, and, in 1968, relocated to Tokyo where he managed their Far Eastern operations until 1975. In 1975, he was named President of Philipp Brothers, and served as Director of Englehard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation, the parent firm of Philipp Brothers, until being named its Vice Chairman in 1979. In 1981, Mr. Tendler was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Phibro Corporation, which later acquired Salomon Brothers. In 1982, Mr. Tendler became Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Phibro-Salomon, Inc. From 1986 to 1989, New York-based investment banking house Ehrlich-Bober Financial Corporation looked to him as its Advisory Director, and from 1993 to 1996, investment banking and brokerage firm Ryan, Beck & Co. named Mr. Tendler its Director. Furthermore, Mr. Tendler served as Director of Savient Pharmaceuticals (formerly Bio-Technology General Corporation (Nasdaq: SVNT) from 1994-2007, Director of V.I. Technologies, Inc. (later Panacos Pharmaceuticals - Nasdaq-PANC) from 1995-2005, and Director of Agrifos Fertilizer, Inc. from 2003 to 2007.
Concurrent with his many responsibilities in the commodity and investment banking sectors and other leadership roles, Mr. Tendler lent his knowledge and expertise as Chairman of the Subcommittee for Trade of the US-GDR Trade and Economic Council, Director and member of the Executive Committee of the US-USSR Trade and Economic Council, member of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee of The Foreign Policy Association, and Director of the US-China Business Council.
Mr. Tendler's capabilities were also put to good use by New York University Graduate School of Business Administration where he was a member of the Board of Overseers, and Lenox Hill Hospital where he was a member of the Board of Trustees. He was also a Trustee for the non-profit Center for the Advancement of Women.
He has been recognized for his work with the Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League's Metals & Mining Products Division (1976), the Edith & Herbert Lehman Award from Henry Street Settlement (1982), and the Man-of-the-Year Award from the Foreign Trade Society of Bernard M. Baruch College (1985). He has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1982.
Mr. Tendler was married to Bea Weisberg from 1958 until her passing in April 2018. They had two daughters, Pearl and Karyn.
