A former longtime physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory of 41 years, Dr. Feit retired from his full-time role in 2013 to serve as a visiting scientist of the lab's professionals program. During his tenure, he led the laser damage modeling group within the National Ignition Facility for eight years, led theoretical optics, short pulse lasers, applications and technology for seven years and led the optical physics group within physics and space technology for four years. Following in the mission to strengthen the United States' security through the development and application of world-class science and technology, Dr. Feit was also an adjunct faculty member in the department of applied science at the University of California, Davis, between 1984 and 1990.
An expert in chemical physics, Dr. Feit was involved in a number of projects at the lab as well, which included serving as a research project leader for the Undergraduate Summer Institute for 10 years and as the co-director of the Summer School on Chaos in Physical Systems in 1992. Outside of the lab, Dr. Feit was on the organizing committee for the International Conference on the Physics of Chaos and Systems Far from Equilibrium in 1987 and was on the physics committee for the associateship program with the National Research Council in 1982 and 1984.
Throughout his many years in the industry, Dr. Feit has published more than 250 publications in scholarly articles, served as a scientific editor for the "Inertial Confinement Fusion Quarterly" and was the associate editor for "OSA Optics Express." A longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and several honor societies, Dr. Feit was also honored by being named a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America. The recipient of multiple accolades, he received several awards from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, including a Physical and Life Sciences Award in 2014, a Photon Science Award in 2013 and a Chemistry and Materials Science Associate Director Award in 2004. He was honored with having the Most Cited Article in the "Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids" between 2006 and 2010.
Dr. Feit has held a Bachelor of Arts in physics with honors and special honors from Lehigh University since 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1969. Included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West, Dr. Feit has been married to Mary Kay Kalson since 2006, has two children and enjoys painting in his down time.
