Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Cormier has published articles in national journals on the fields of adult and pediatric spine and epilepsy. He is noted for serving on the Council of State Neurological Society as a representative of Alabama to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. In addition to his position with Acadiana Neurosurgery, Dr. Cormier is recognized as an owner of a high intense interval training fitness studio, as well as one of the few surgical specialty hospital physician owners.
Outside of his career as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Cormier holds great passion for the sport of motor racing. Recognized and regarded as one of the country's top neurosurgeons, he created the Motorsports Safety Group, a collaboration of forward-thinking minds geared toward continuing efforts that serve to foster improvements in the safety of racing. Among the ways in which Dr. Cormier helps racers is through offering advice and guidance about how to stay healthy while enjoying the sport. In a recent article published in the December 2017 edition of NASCAR Pole Position, Dr. Cormier provided tips regarding hydration, nutrition and the prevention of spinal injuries. In addition, he recommended High Intensity Interval Training for race car drivers who are looking to be proactive in their concussion prevention. As he moves forward with his career, Dr. Cormier aims to help the Motorsports Safety Group build more of a presence in the racing series.
Certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Dr. Cormier maintains involvement with a wide range of medical organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He looks forward to training future neurosurgeons by teaching both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques, including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, as well as minimally invasive complex spinal surgery.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Cormier graduated from St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette. He went on to attend Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, where he was a widely regarded basketball player. While completing an MD through Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Dr. Cormier became eligible for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He also served on several committees, including the LSU School of Medicine Admissions Committee and LSU School of Medicine Dean's Selection Committee. In 2004, Dr. Cormier was recognized as the medical school's representative to the Louisiana Board of Supervisors.
Dr. Cormier chose to become a neurosurgeon because he was interested in the central nervous system and the surgical aspect of the field. He completed an internship in general surgery and neurosurgery through the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, and additional training through the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While pursuing formal education, Dr. Cormier gained extensive experience in complex spinal surgery under the supervision of Dr. Mark N. Hadley and his associates. He also received special training in minimally invasive spinal surgery, as well as open and endoscopic brain surgery.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine, Dr. Cormier was selected to receive the Resident Leadership Award from the Division of Neurological Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During this time, he was honored for "his dedication to promoting the art and science of neurosurgery, demonstrating outstanding clinical skills, offering leadership by word and example, and providing mentorship to junior residents."
