Prior to these appointments, she served as assistant dean of academic affairs for the College of Sciences from 2013 to 2015 and assistant dean of academic programs for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences from 2012 to 2013. Previously, she was with Appalachian State University as a professor of biology from 1999 to 2012 and chair of the Department of Biology from 1999 to 2004. Dr. Martin began her career as an assistant and associate professor at the University of Notre Dame from 1983 to 1999 and an assistant professor for the University of Louisville from 1981 to 1983.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Martin pursued an education at UNC Charlotte, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1974. She continued her studies with a Master of Science in 1976 at Wake Forest University. Dr. Martin concluded her academic efforts at Wake Forest University in 1980, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Martin has participated in numerous endeavors in her professional circles. A Consultant for Earth and Sky NPR since 1999, she has additionally contributed to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University as director of the honors program, director of the Thomas Jefferson Scholars Program, and the director of summer programs and distance education programs since 2017. A North Carolina State University faculty advisor for Duke University Marine Sciences Education Consortium since 2012, she has held multiple positions for the University of Notre Dame as director of graduate studies in the Department of Biology from 1990 to 1992 and as director of the optical laboratory from 1983 to 1999. A Jelly Stalker with Appalachian State University, Dr. Martin has found much success with her creative works, having penned chapters for books, scientific research articles to esteemed journals, and presentations for conferences.
In addition to her primary trade, Dr. Martin remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has maintained involvement with the National Council on Undergraduate Research as Chair of the biology division from 2010 to 2012, an executive board member from 2010 to 2012, an elected biology council member since 2005, and the chair of the Student Programs Task Force since 2014. From 2010 to 2012, she was active as the program director in the Biological Infrastructure Division for the National Science Foundation. Dr. Martin has also been a member of the American Microscopic Society, for which she served as president from 2009 to 2011.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Martin has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. The first tenured woman in the Department of Biological Sciences for the University of Notre Dame, she was recognized as a Postdoctoral Fellow of the University of Alberta from 1980 to 1981 as well as an Invited Visiting Scholar for James Cook University, Cairns, Australia from 2006 to 2007. Dr. Martin has been presented with a Decree of Excellence in Science in 2008, an Excellence Award and Leading Scientist of the World Award in 2005, a 100 Scholars Research Award from Appalachian State University in 2004, a Frank O'Malley Undergraduate Teaching Award from the University of Notre Dame from 1995 to 1996, and a Career Advancement Award from the National Science Foundation from 1987 to 1990.
Furthermore, Dr. Martin has been honored by the International Biographical Centre as a Leading Professional of the World, International Biographical Centre in 2015, among the Top 100 Professionals in 2015, among the 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century in 2015, and as a Leading Scientist of the World in 2005 and 2008. She has additionally received grants from the National Science Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Honor Society, the National Research Council of Canada, the Southern Regional Education Board, and the Indiana Academy of Science, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Featured in the American Registry of Outstanding Professionals in 2007, Dr. Martin has been selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
