Richard Severo Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Mr. Severo celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. With 50 years of industry experience, Mr. Severo is currently retired, having most recently served as a reporter, foreign correspondent, feature writer, feature obituary reporter, and a science and environmental reporter for The New York Times from 1968 to 2006. Prior to these appointments, he was a reporter for the Washington Post from 1966 to 1968, a television news writer for CBS from 1963 to 1966, a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune from 1961 to 1963, and a reporter for the Associated Press News from 1957 to 1961. Mr. Severo began his career as a news assistant for CBS from 1954 to 1955 and as a reporter for the Poughkeepsie New Yorker from 1956 to 1957.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Severo pursued an education at Colgate University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1954. Following this accomplishment, he completed postgraduate coursework at New York University Institute of Fine Arts from 1955 to 1956. He concluded his studies with postgraduate coursework at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University from 1964 to 1965.

An associate for the Seminar on the City at Columbia University from 1966 to 1969, he served as a visiting lecturer on American culture at Vassar College from 1985 to 1999. Additionally, he was on the board of directors for the Hudson Valley Philharmonic from 1998 to 1999 and the Colgate University Alumni Corporation from 1988 to 1992. Furthermore, Mr. Severo established the Thomas and Mary Severo Scholarship to provide funds for majors in music and Italian at Vassar College in 2002.

Mr. Severo has found much success with his written works as well, having authored "Lisa H.: The True Story of an Extraordinary and Courageous Woman" in 1985. Likewise, he coauthored "The Wages of War: When America's Soldiers Came Home: From Valley Forge to Vietnam" in 1989. Mr. Severo has further contributed articles to magazines outside of his primary trade.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Severo has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. He was presented with the National Commander's Award from the American Legion in 1990, the Front Page Award from the Washington-Baltimore News Guild in 1967, the Journalistic Award from H.A.V.E.N. in 1969, and the Schaeffer Gold Typewriter Award from the New York Press Association in 1969. He also received the Page One Award from the Newspaper Guild of New York in 1970, 1977, and 1982, the Leone di San Marco Award from the Italian Heritage & Culture Committee in 1982, the George Polk Memorial Award in Journalism & Communication Studies from Long Island University in 1975, and an award from the Hudson River Fishermen's Association in 1976. Moreover, Mr. Severo earned the Feature Award from the New York Press Club in 1977, the Media Award from the American Cancer Society in 1977, the Mike Berger Award from Columbia University in 1976, and the James Wright Brown Award from the Deadline Club and Sigma Delta Chi in 1976. Mr. Severo received the Heywood Broun Memorial Award from the American Newspaper Guild in 1977.

He was named a Poynter Fellow-in-Residence of Vassar College from 1974 to 1975 and a News Fellow of CBS from 1964 to 1965. He additionally garnered the Penney-Missouri Newspaper Award from the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri in 1978, a Media Award from Agent Orange Victims International in 1982, a Gift of Life Award from the New York Blood Center in 1991, and the Special Writing Award from the Society of Silurians in 1992. Mr. Severo has been selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
