Dr. Moon is the chief research engineer at LG Innotek Company, Ltd. in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Serving in this capacity for the past 10 years, he formerly spent three years as the chief research engineer at LG Electronics in the LED Research & Development Center and two years completing postdoctoral work at Virginia Commonwealth University in the United States.
Specializing in the development of III-nitride high-power LEDs and LDs, high-power AlGaInP, AlGaInAs-based red and IR LEDs, the growth characterization and fabrication of III-Nitride electronic and power devices and III-Nitride nanostructures for bioengineering and novel functional devices and the development of novel multi-functional optoelectronic devices, Dr. Moon has since published approximately 70 scholarly articles, as well as nearly two dozen additional professional papers and abstracts in his area of expertise.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in metallurgical engineering from Hanyang University in 1997, a Master of Science in materials science and engineering from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in 1999, and a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science and engineering from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in 2003, Dr. Moon received an Honor Award from Hanyang University in 1997, as well as several scholarships supported by both the Korean Government and Hanyang University. Furthermore, he was a Grand Prize and Gold Prize Winner of two LED Patents Contests at LG Innotek in 2010 and 2011, respectively. He currently holds 89 registered patents and has 84 patents pending.
A member of the program committee for OPTO, which is a part of the International Society for Optical Engineering Photonics West, Dr. Moon is also a longstanding member of the Korean Physical Society and the Materials Research Society. Married to Chunli Liu with two children, Dr. Moon enjoys playing golf in his spare time.
