He is the first person in Greater China to run a private company to provide commercial meteorological services on the Internet for people who understand the Chinese language around the globe.
NANJING, CHINA, June 28, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dr. Xiefei Zhi with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Zhi celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process. Dr. Zhi is being recognized for pioneering work and fundamental contributions to the commercial meteorological services in Greater China including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as his outstanding work in meteorological education, training and research.
Dr. Zhi is currently serving as the Executive Editor-in-Chief of Transactions of Atmospheric Sciences and Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology for the past 14 years. During his tenure at the university, he has also spent three years as the executive director in the weather laboratory and two years as the deputy dean of the College of Atmospheric Sciences. Dr. Zhi's background extends back to 1989 when he first served as a teaching assistant and lecturer at Nanjing Institute of Meteorology for a total of seven years, followed by four years as a research scientist at the University of Bonn and four years as the director of the Asian office at WetterOnline in Bonn, Germany. More recently, he served as the executive director of the World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Centre in Nanjing between 2007 and 2010.
Conducting research in innovative multi-model ensemble forecasting methods by using a sliding training period to improve forecast skill, Dr. Zhi has also conducted research in how the length of Madden-Julian oscillation period may be modulated by diabatic heating in the atmosphere. Contributing scholarly articles to peer-reviewed journals as a result of his research, he is also active with several professional societies, including the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society and the American Geophysical Union.
Dr. Zhi is the first person in Greater China to run a private company to provide commercial meteorological services on the Internet for people who understand the Chinese language around the globe. Together with his German colleagues, Dr. Joachim Klassen, and Dr. Ulrich Roemer, in 2000, Dr. Zhi founded the world-famous website "Weather Online" in Chinese (http://www.t7online.com) which is devoted to developing state-of-the-art technology in weather forecasting and climate prediction, and providing weather and climate services. Later he became the Co-CEO of WeatherOnline Asia Co. Ltd. This website has served about two hundred million users worldwide for more than 17 years, and in 2018 it was transformed into a mobile application of weather and climate services in the Wechat platform in order to better serve the public. The website "Weather Online" has greatly promoted the development of commercial meteorological services in Greater China. The numerical weather prediction products and their derivative products provided by the website have been widely used by local weather observatories and hydrological departments in China, and are important reference materials for their local weather and hydrological forecasting. It has made significant contributions to the development of meteorological undertaking and the safety and welfare of human beings.
Dr. Zhi is the author or co-author of over 100 scientific papers. His research has established that the multi-model ensemble weather prediction improves the probabilistic and deterministic forecast skills and found operative applications in short-term, medium-range and extended-range weather forecasts. In addition, he achieved some new findings in the study of atmospheric low frequency oscillation and its frequency variation mechanism, interannual and interdecadal variability of the Asian monsoon, as well as the high-resolution weather forecast based on the statistical and dynamic downscaling and multi-model ensemble forecasts. He attaches great importance to the transformation of his research results into operative applications in meteorological services, and has helped numerous weather observatories to develop forecasting system based on multimodel ensemble forecasts and downscaling techniques.
He has supervised 96 postgraduate students in Atmospheric Sciences, among them there are 21 PhD students and 8 international postgraduate students. He has served as deputy dean of the College of Atmospheric Sciences, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, and acting director of the WMO Regional Training Centre in Nanjing, China. He has made significant contributions to international meteorological education and training, and trained more than 3,000 meteorologists and meteorological administrators from developing countries. In 2007, Dr. Zhi was elected as the official member of the CO-COM/SCHOTI, and since then he has served the international meteorological education and training fields for more than 10 years.
Mr. Zhi received his Bachelor and Master degree in Meteorology from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, in 1986 and 1989, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Bonn, Germany in 2000. Happily married, he was included in the 32nd edition of Who's Who in the World in 2015.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Xiefei Zhi has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
