A retired research fellow at Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., in Jacksonville, FL, since 2013, Dr. Enns was first hired by the organization as a senior scientist in 1989. Earning the role of principal scientist between 1998 and 2003, he then spent another five years as senior principal scientist before becoming a research fellow. Dr. Enns formerly worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories as a member of their technical staff in Whippany, NJ, and for Midland Macromolecular Institute as a research associate in Midland, MI.
A longtime consultant for Plastics Analysis Instruments, Inc., since 1981 and at his alma mater, Princeton University, during the mid-to-late 1980s, Dr. Enns has contributed many articles to scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Applied Polymer Science, and has contributed chapters to several books. The former editor of North American Thermal Analysis Society Conference Proceedings and Thermochimica Acta, he remains active as a member of the Society of Rheology, member and former program chairman of the American Chemical Society and the North Jersey Thermal Analysis Group, and member of the North American Thermal Analysis Society and the Society of Plastic Engineers, where he has served in various roles.
Responsible for the development of the concept of a liquid-liquid transition in polymers, the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) isothermal cure and continuous-heating-transformation (CHT) cure diagrams for thermosetting polymers, and for applying these concepts to the photopolymerization of crosslinkable monomer units to form 3D objects (e.g., contact lenses) without the use of a mold, Dr. Enns holds 30 patents in his area of expertise. He was the recipient of an Outstanding Service Award from the North American Thermal Analysis Society in 1996 and was elected Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers in 2000. He was also awarded Vistakon's President's Award for Outstanding Achievement in R&D Services & Support in 1992.
Born in Canada, Dr. Enns immigrated to the United States in 1973, just after completing a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at the University of British Columbia. He then pursued additional degrees, including a Master of Science in macromolecular science at Case Western Reserve University in 1975 and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering at the prestigious Princeton University in 1979 and 1982, respectively. Prior to earning his degrees, Dr. Enns became a certified teacher in biblical studies through the Winkler Bible Institute in Manitoba, Canada, in 1969. Married to his wife Mary Lou for more than 40 years, Dr. Enns has been showcased in more than 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
