A professor emeritus of Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Lin was a Charles E. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the College of Engineering and director of the Center for Applied Stochastics Research for more than 20 years. He previously taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, first as an assistant professor in 1960 and later as a full professor of aeronautical and astronomical engineering from 1965 to 1983. Dr. Lin also taught at the Imperial College of Engineering in Ethiopia from 1957 to 1958.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Lin was a research engineer for Boeing in Renton, WA, and an engineer for Vertol Aircraft Corporation in Morton, PA. Especially enjoying his time spent at Boeing, the technical problems he experienced on the job really motivated him. It was here that he also devised how to calculate the stress level in the fuselage. Furthermore, Dr. Lin dedicated several years as a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton in England, as a visiting professor of mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and as a consultant for several great companies, including General Motors, Boeing and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The author of "Probabilistic Theory of Structural Dynamics" in 1967 and "Probabilistic Structural Dynamics: Advanced Theory an Applications" in 1995, Dr. Lin edited several works and contributed articles to several scholarly journals as well. He is an elected fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is a member of the American Association for Wind Engineering, the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability, the National Academy of Engineering, the Russian Academy of Engineering and Sigma Xi , The Scientific Research Honor Society.
The recipient of an honorary Doctor of Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada in 1994, Dr. Lin received several awards over the past three decades, beginning with an Alfred M. Freudenthal Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1984. He also garnered a Theodore von Karman Medal from the organization in 1998, an Alexander Von Humboldt Senior U.S. Scientist Award in 2000, a J.P. Den Hartog Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2001 and a Special Prize for Numerous Landmark Contributions from the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability in 2005.
Born in Fuzhou, Fujian, China, Dr. Lin attended a technical high school before earning a Bachelor of Science at Xiamen University in 1946. Teaching at the university for two years upon his graduation, he then returned to college where he completed both a Master of Science in 1955 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1957 at Stanford University. Married to his wife Ying-yuh June Wang since 1952 with four children: Jane, Della, Lucia, and Winifred, and four grandchildren, Dr. Lin has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who in the World.
