With more than 40 years of experience in social work and mental health services, Mr. Kish has become a leader in his field. With a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Master of Social Work from Loyola University Chicago, Mr. Kish began his career as a child welfare worker with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. He held positions at various hospitals, clinics and health care facilities throughout Michigan before retiring in 2014 as the social work supervisor at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center. In addition to his practical work in the field, Mr. Kish was also a counselor and adjunct professor in the School of Social Work at Wayne State University, which he cites as the highlight of his accomplished career.
Mr. Kish was inspired to go into his field by James Freer, an incredible fellow and professor at the University of Detroit. Dr. Freer was also a psychologist who treated children, and he encouraged Mr. Kish to pursue a master's degree in social work. For his accomplishments in social work and mental health services, Mr. Kish received the Social Worker of the Year Award by the Metro Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. An active member of his local community as well, Mr. Kish maintains affiliation with the Board of Review for the City of West Branch, the Ogemaw County Commission on Aging, and AuSable Valley Community Mental Health.
