MEMPHIS, TN, July 10, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Monica Jablonski, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Jablonski celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Jablonski is recognized in her industry for her outstanding contributions to science education and research in identifying mechanisms of visually blinding disorders. Her main research interests focus on glaucoma and age related macular degeneration, and her work seeks to find treatments and therapies to help preserve vision in those diseases while also developing delivery systems for drug treatments. Dr. Jablonski currently holds the title of associate dean of postdoctoral affairs in the College of Graduate Health Sciences at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, a position she has held since 2013. She also serves the university as a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, and the Department of Ophthalmology. She has served the institute for more than 20 years, holding associate professor and assistant professor appointments prior to being named a full professor. She began her career in the industry as a research instructor at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine, where she served from 1994 to 1995.
Alongside her work in education, Dr. Jablonski served the institute as a member of multiple committees; she currently serves as a member of the postdoctoral advisory committee and the vision core grant executive committee. Previously, she acted on the Faculty Recruitment Committee, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the Faculty Budgets and Benefits Committee, among many others. She was also a member of the faculty senate from 2006 to 2013.
Dr. Jablonski was the first person in her family to go to college; her father did not even attend high school. Her initial plan was to get a degree in medical technology, but in her junior year, she took a course in medical technology that she absolutely hated. She wanted to salvage her three years of academic experience while still doing something meaningful. One of her professors put her in touch with someone who was doing research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and there she developed a passion for research. Dr. Jablonski received a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, from Mount Mary University in 1986, and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in physiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1990. She continued her education as a postdoctoral research fellow in retinal cell biology at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine from 1990 to 1994. She is also recognized as a diplomate of New England Biolabs Molecular Biology and PCR Course at Smith College.
She attributes her success to her mentors. Her primary mentor was her Ph.D. adviser, Henry Edelhouser. More recently, Dr. Dianna A. Johnson also played a large role in Dr. Jablonski's success as the person who recruited her to work at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Johnson was very supportive in mentoring her and making sure she was on the right path. Dr. Jablonski currently acts as a scientific reviewer for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Biomaterials, Molecules, Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs, Annals of Anatomy, Molecular Vision, the Journal of Neuroscience Research and the Journal of Molecular Neuroscience. In the past, she also served as a scientific reviewer of Transplantation, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Experimental Eye Research, Genes, Brain and Behavior and Current Eye Research. She also currently serves as a member of the editorial board of PLOS ONE and previously acted as a guest member of the editorial board of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. She has authored more than 80 book chapters and has developed more than 85 abstracts.
Dr. Jablonski recently developed a novel platform for delivering drugs to the eyes. She has just filed a patent on the device. In recognition of the innovative contribution to medicine, she was the first to be invited to perform her research in the innovation laboratory space at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In 2018, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, in affiliation with Memphis Bioworks, will collaborate to research and produce new high-quality medical products.
Dr. Jablonski currently serves as a member of a number of organizations, including the International Complex Trait Consortium, the Center for Integrative and Translational Genomics, the Downtown Memphis Chapter of the Lions Clubs International, the Center of Excellence of Genomics and Bioinformatics at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the Tennessee Mouse Genome Consortium, the International Society of Eye Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. She is also a former member of the Association of Women Faculty at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the Student Medical Association for Animals in Research and Teaching, and the Wisconsin Association for Biomedical Research and Education.
Dr. Jablonski has received a number of awards in recognition of her professional success, contributions to science education, and outstanding and innovative developments in medicine. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center honored her as Inaugural Innovation Incubator in 2017, and with the Postdoctoral Research Trainee Distinguished Mentor Award in 2012 and Top Research Presentation Award in 1997. She was inducted into the Inaugural class of ARVO fellows in 2009 and, in recognition of her success in the industry, was featured in Cambridge Who's Who Registry of Executives, Professionals and Entrepreneurs. Her research was also on the cover of the journals Genomics in 2004 and Differentiation in 1995. In addition, Dr. Jablonski was also honored as one of a few selected to participate in the Inaugural Memphis Technology Transfer Accelerator (C3) Program at Memphis Research Consortium and Emerge Memphis in 2012. She received many other awards, honors and scholarships in recognition of her excellence in education, academia and research.
Dr. Jablonski was born in Milwaukee, WI, to Arnold Bernard Jablonski and Gertrude Angela (Steil) Jablonski. She is married to Daniel Burkholder and has two children, Drew and Luca. Outside of her career, Dr. Jablonski served her community as officer of the board and board member of the Richland Elementary Education Fund. She also served as a science fair judge with the Lausanne Collegiate School from 2003 to 2008. Additionally, Dr. Jablonski acted as the co-founder and co-chair of the educational programs in the mid-south chapter of the Foundation for Fighting Blindness in 2007.
