A widely regarded musician, educator and professor emeritus, Dr. Brings has written dozens of compositions for a variety of musical ensembles throughout the course of his career. His most recent works include "Trio," "Duo for Flute and Piano," "3 Scintillae," "All Around and About," "4 Revelations of Varying Intensities" and "Duologue 18b," which were all released in 2017. Drawing upon six decades of experience, Dr. Brings has built an impressive discography that includes albums recorded and released by Navona Records, Arizona University Recordings, Capstone Records, Vienna Modern Masters, North/South Recordings, Centaur Records, Contemporary Record Society and Grenadilla LP. His published compositions include works for orchestra, band, chorus, a wide variety of chamber ensembles, piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar and voice.
Early in his career, Dr. Brings received a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College of the City University of New in 1955. He went on to attend Columbia University, where he received a Master of Arts in 1957. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Dr. Brings attended Princeton University, where he completed postgraduate coursework between 1962 and 1963. While completing formal education, he was recognized as a student of Otto Luening and Gardner Read, in addition to studying with Roger Sessions. Dr. Brings joined Queens College of the City University of New York as a professor of music after receiving a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University in 1964.
Outside of his career as an educator, Dr. Brings is also a pianist and composer. Since the inception of his career, he has performed extensively on a national and international basis. In recognition of his contributions to the musical community, Dr. Brings has been selected to receive an ASCAP Award every year since 1975. In 1988, he was awarded an Individual Artist Grant by the Connecticut Commission of the Arts. Dr. Brings has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 1st through 3rd editions of Who's Who in Entertainment. In addition to serving as the vice president of Connecticut Composers, Dr. Brings is noted as the former chairman of the Eastern Region of the American Society of University Composers. He is also recognized as a professor emeritus of music with the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College of the City University of New York, and as a director with the Weston Music Center and School of the Performing Arts.
Dr. Brings has authored and co-authored numerous publications in his areas of expertise, including "A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony." In addition, he has contributed articles to College Music Symposium, Composer USA, New Oxford Review, Society of Composers Newsletter, New Music Connoisseur, Contemporary Music Newsletter and Adoremus Bulletin. In an effort to stay abreast of recent developments in the musical community, Dr. Brings maintains involvement with the American Society of Composers and National Association of Composers, among other organizations.
