A retired and successful agronomist, Dr. Jones devoted 36 years to the field, both in the field and in the classroom at the University of California at Davis. Retiring in 1991, he also did consultant work for much of his career for such international organizations as the IRI Research Institute in Brazil, CSIRO in Australia, the Agency for International Development University in Portugal, the Basque Government in Spain and MAF in New Zealand, as well as for the Sulpher Institute in Washington, D.C. Upon retirement, Dr. Jones became very active with service missions, first to Scotland for 18 months beginning in 1991, followed by another three years in Atlanta, GA beginning in 1997.
Dr. Jones earned his Bachelor of Science at Utah State University in 1951 and a Doctor of Philosophy at The Ohio State University in 1955. Prior to entering college, he spent three years in the U.S. Navy. An elected fellow of the Soil Science Society and the American Agronomy Society, Dr. Jones has contributed numerous articles to various scholarly journals in his area of expertise throughout his career.
More recently, Dr. Jones joined Kiwanis in 2017 to make a significant contribution in society. He has also since became a guide/host for Pioneer Village and an officer in sons for the Utah Pioneers in 2006. He additionally served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America, first from 1962 to 1970 and again from 2005 to 2008. Dr. Jones also served on the school board for the Ukiah Elementary School District during the early 1960s.
A longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Dr. Jones notes that religion is very important in his life. His faith has been one of his motivating factors in all he has done and all he continues to do. Dr. Jones believes that service to others within the community and our nation is very significant.
In 2006 Dr. Jones joined the National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers, an has been an officer in that organization. He continues to be a guide/host for their Pioneer Village. In 2017 he joined Kiwanis to make a significant contribution to society. He additionally served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America, first from 1962 to 1970 and again from 2005 to 2008. Dr. Jones also served on the school board for the Ukiah Elementary School District during the early 1960s.
Married since 1951 to Grace Elaine Guymon with six children and 37 grandchildren, Dr. Jones' wife was the first in her family to attend college and earn a degree in elementary education. Marrying just one year after she began teaching, she later became president of the Parent Teacher Association and spent several years on the California State PTA Board of Managers.
Outside of Dr. Jones' extracurricular activities, he enjoys learning about history and working in his garden.
