Ms. Amsler is a tenured full professor and the Keller-Runden chair in public service at Indiana University (IU) School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate students courses in Law and Public Affairs, Negotiation and Dispute Resolution, and a capstone course, as well has mentoring doctoral students. She is also a Saltman Senior Scholar at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University Nevada Las Vegas. She previously spent three years as a lecturer-in-law at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. She also served as the director of the Indiana Conflict Resolution Institute from 1997 to 2006, and held several visiting faculty, scholar, and lecturer positions at Uppsala Universitet on a Fulbright fellowship, the University of California Hasting College of Law, University of Aberdeen Law Department, and University of California Berkeley Center for the Study of Law and Society. Prior to entering academia, Ms. Amsler spent a decade practicing labor and employment law at Shipman & Goodwin in Hartford, first as an associate attorney, then as partner.
Currently, Ms. Amsler's research includes examining dispute systems design and the legal infrastructure for collaboration, dispute resolution, and public participation in governance. An expert in collaborative governance, public engagement, dispute resolution and labor law, she has written extensively throughout her career, contributing more than 100 published works, including articles, monographs, chapters to books and the editing of three books on dispute resolution and collaborative public management. In 2005, her article on new governance practice, which was co-authored alongside Tina Nabatchi and Rosemary O'Leary, was named one of the 75 Most Influential Articles of the Past 75 Years by the Public Administration Review. Her lead article on workplace mediation, which was co-authored with Cynthia J. Hallberlin, Denise A. Walker and Won-Tae Chung and was published in Harvard Negotiation Law Review, has on the Social Science Research Network's Top 10 list of most downloaded articles in both conflict resolution and human resources. Furthermore, Ms. Amsler's book, "The Promise and Performance of Environmental Conflict Resolution," received a Best Book Award by the American Society for Public Administration. She is currently in the process of revising a book that she co-authored on dispute systems design, which she hopes to release before the year's end.
A longstanding member of the American Bar Association (ABA), the American Society for Public Administration and the International Association of Conflict Management, among others, Ms. Amsler previously served as director of the National USPS REDRESS Evaluation Project with the U.S. Postal Service between 1994 and 2006 and was on the board of directors and was president of the University of Connecticut Law School Alumni Association between 1981 and 1989. Ms. Amsler has served on the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU faculty every year since 1992, as well. In 2014, the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution honored her with an Outstanding Scholarship Award in the field of dispute resolution. She also received the Rubin Theory-to-Practice Award from the International Association for Conflict Management for research that affected practice and the Abner Award from the Association for Conflict Resolution for excellence in research on labor and employment relations in the public sector, among other research and teaching awards. Since 1987, Ms. Amsler has been highlighted in numerous editions of Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Smith College, Ms. Amsler double-majored in ancient Greek and philosophy. Interested in German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, she studied systems for human relations and labor law. She received a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with high honors, at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Ms. Amsler has since been admitted to the bar for the state of Connecticut Bar, the U.S. District Court of Connecticut, and the Seventh Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
