Earlier in his career, he honed his skills through varying roles with New York Hospital, the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Rockefeller Institute Hospital and Bellevue Hospital. With hands-on expertise behind him, he began teaching at Cornell University, where he held a plethora of roles over the years, including assistant director of the comprehensive care and teaching program, assistant professor of medicine, associate professor, and professor. Additionally, he served as Dean of the Weill Cornell Medical College and Associate Dean of the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Dr. Buchanan is a founding Trustee of The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, the first private co-ed university in the country, and has been a member of the Board since its inception in 1985.
An expert in the field, Dr. Buchanan holds a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College, a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University, an honorary Doctor of Medicine from Peking Union Medical School, an honorary Doctor of Science from Amherst College, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Rush University. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he affiliates himself with the American Public Health Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the Illinois Hospital Association, and the American College of Physicians, as well as various others on the state and national levels. For his professional accomplishments, he has been recognized with the Cornell Medical College Alumni Award, and a number of features in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
