With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Robboy has served as a tenured professor with Duke University since 1992, and as the vice chair of the pathology department since 1997. Prior to obtaining his current roles, he held a number of positions with the New Jersey Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, including as a professor of pathology from 1984 to 1992, department chair and pathologist-in-chief from 1984 to 1989 and as an obstetrics and gynecology professor from 1989 to 1992. Earlier in his career, Dr. Robboy was an assistant and associate professor of pathology with Harvard Medical School from 1972 to 1984, and an instructor with Tufts Medical School from 1968 to 1969. From 1987 to 1992, he was a Commissioner for the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research.
Dr. Robboy began his career as a student at the University of Michigan, obtaining an undergraduate degree in 1961 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1965, serving as an intern with Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland until 1966. He subsequently joined Massachusetts General Hospital as a resident and chief resident in pathology from 1966 to 1970, an assistant in pathology from 1972 to 1973, an assistant pathologist from 1973 to 1976, and an associate pathologist from 1976 to 1984. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology.
Dr. Robboy served as the president of the College of American Pathologists from 2011 to 2013 and as president of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists from 2003 to 2005.
Throughout his career, Dr. Robboy has been recognized for his contributions, including with the College of American Pathologist's President's Award and Pathologist of the Year Award. The recipient of a Junior Faculty Award from the American Cancer Society, he was the recipient of a Foundation Prize from the American College of Ob-Gyns, America's Top Physician Award, and the Sara & Mutt Evans Outstanding Community Service Award. He has been recognized as a Pardee Fellow, a Lederle Laboratory Fellow, an Eliza Howell Fellow, a Ford Foundation Fellow, an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellow, and a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. Robboy is also an Honorary Fellow of the Association of Affiliated Pathologists (New Delhi, India), Faculty of Pathologists, Royal College of Physicians (Ireland), Royal College of Pathologists (United Kingdom) and Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels.
