A professor emeritus at Youngstown State University in Ohio since 2016, Dr. Brown first joined the faculty in 1995 as an instructor of English. Later serving as an assistant and associate professor, he earned the title of full professor in 2004. Mostly teaching adult education, Dr. Brown formerly served as a staff administrator at the English Language Institute at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh and director of the University of Pittsburgh Japan Program in Tokyo.
Dr. Brown also served as the assistant director of the Pittsburgh English Language Institute in Japan. Prior to his years in Pittsburgh, he taught as an instructor and head teacher at the James English School in Sendai, Japan, as an instructor at Tohoku Gakuin University in Sendai, the Tohoku Foreign Language School (a technical college in Sendai) and the Castro Valley School District in California.
Interested in foreign languages since middle school, various cultures have always appealed to Dr. Brown. Going on to receive a Bachelor of Arts at the University of California in 1974, he continued his studies at San Diego State University, receiving a Master of Arts. He later graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in foreign language education at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Brown is a certified teacher of adult education in the state of California.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Brown most recently served as a contributor to the TESOL Encyclopedia of English Language Teaching in 2018, and was a co-author for several books between 2004 and 2018. He further contributed to the "Handbook of Research in Second Language Teaching and Learning" in 2017. Likewise, Dr. Brown was a series editor for Journeys between 1997 and 1999.
The recipient of Distinguished Professor Awards from Youngstown State University in 2002, 2005 and 2015, Dr. Brown has also been cited in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. He is a longtime member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Delta.
