An expert in military and polar operations, Mr. Frye has been retired from military service since 2004, having served in multiple capacities for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Air Force for 45 years. During this time, he maintained involvement with the U.S. Department of Defense from 1959 to 2004. Serving in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968, as well as the submarine service and the U.S. Ice Breaker service, Mr. Frye was also a civic service worker between the years of 1979 and 2004. Locally, Mr. Frye served on the board of directors of the Good Samaritan Village Veterans, where he is also a former chair and former vice-chairman.
Raised in a very poor family who often went hungry, Mr. Frye begun working by the time he had become a teenager. Soon after, he met a man named Roger Moore, who previously served in the military. A personal hero, Mr. Frye soon after decided to follow in his footsteps by enlisting, as it would be a good opportunity for him to travel and see the world.
When he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, Mr. Frye was assigned to Alaska, where he was tasked with repairing lighthouses. He was also involved in several northern explorations as well as one southern polar exploration. While on the return of one of these explorations on Halloween Night in 1966, their boat sank, leaving himself and four other servicemen stranded on a deserted island. Because of terrible weather conditions, no rescue planes could be sent to look for them. Five days later, a rescue ship found them, but unfortunately, three of his fellow servicemen did not survive. Mr. Frye credits his arctic survival training to his survival.
