A retired state Supreme Court justice, Ms. Holder served in Tennessee between 1996 and 2014, was the first woman to serve as the chief justice between 2008 and 2010, and was a judge for the Circuit Court of Tennessee for the 30th Judicial District at Memphis between 1990 and 1996. Her successful career in law, which began more than 40 years ago as an associate at Catalano & Catalano, P.C., in 1977, also included serving as an associate for two other firms and upholding her own private practice for nearly a decade during the 1980s before ultimately working for the state.
Ms. Holder formerly served in other capacities over the years as well. Following her retirement in 2014, she was appointed by Governor Bill Haslam as special chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court in the case of John Jay Hooker et al. v. Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey et al. She also served as second vice president and member of the board of directors for the National Conference of Chief Justices from 2010 to 2011 and was a Tennessee Supreme Court liaison to the Access to Justice Commission from 2009 to 2014. Ms. Holder often enjoyed contributing publications and video presentations and hosted dozens of seminars for other professionals over the course of her career.
A longtime member of multiple professional organizations relative to her field, Ms. Holder served in many roles for the American Bar Association, the Memphis Bar Association and the National Association of Women Judges. She remains active with the American Bar Foundation, the American Inns of Court and the Association for Women Attorneys, among others. A fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation, she was also a founding member of the Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women. Equally active in her community, Ms. Holder continues to serve on the board of commissioners for the Memphis Area Transit Authority and recently served on the board of directors and as director-at-large for the Pitt Alumni Association between 2014 and 2018.
Earning a Bachelor of Science in psychology, summa cum laude, with a minor in French at the University of Pittsburgh, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence at the Duquesne University School of Law, Ms. Holder has since been admitted to the Tennessee, Pennsylvania and D.C. Bars and the Supreme Court of the United States. The recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of the South in 2015, Ms. Holder received multiple other awards as well, including a Tennessee Supreme Court Certificate of Recognition as an Attorney for Justice for providing 50 or more hours of pro bono service in Tennessee in 2015, 2016, and 2017; a Proclamation of Honor and Congratulations from the Tennessee House of Representatives upon induction into the Tennessee Women's Hall of Fame in 2015; and a William M. Leech Jr. Public Service Award for Outstanding Service to the Legal Profession, the Legal System and the Community from the Tennessee Bar Association in 2014. Furthermore, Ms. Holder has been cited in more than 55 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in American Politics.
