Dr. Hamburger has been a physician specializing in nephrology, a sub-specialty of internal medicine, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis since 1968. A former staff member at the VA Hospital and Wishard Memorial Hospital, he amassed a prolific career in academia, beginning as an assistant professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1968. Dr. Hamburger was ultimately recognized by the Indiana University as professor emeritus in 2002.
Earning his undergraduate degree at Villanova University in 1968 and a Doctor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College in 1962, Dr. Hamburger then interned at Jefferson Medical College from 1963 to 1965 while completing his residency and fellowship in nephrology at Jefferson Medical College between 1963 and 1996. Additionally, he served as a captain in the surgical research unit at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston for the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. Dr. Hamburger is also a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Throughout Dr. Hamburger's career, he served on a number of committees, including the board of directors for The Renal Network for nearly a decade and as a trustee for the Kidney Foundation, Inc. during the early 1970s. He continues to serve as a member of the medical advisory board on the Kidney Foundation since 1969. Furthermore, Dr. Hamburger is an Elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Formerly on the board of directors of the North Central Dialysis and Transplant Society, Dr. Hamburger was previously a board director and treasurer for the Renal Physicians Association. He also maintained membership of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs, among others. The recipient of a Distinguished Service Award by the Renal Physicians Association, Dr. Hamburger has been cited in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World over the past 25 years.
