A Regents Professor of Chemistry at Oklahoma State University since 2013, Dr. El Rassi is an esteemed figure in his field who has amassed nearly 40 years of professional excellence. His current research interests include the development of modern liquid phase separation techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography. An analytic chemist by trade, he served Oklahoma State University in a number of capacities prior to his current role, including as a full professor from 1998 to 2013, associate professor from 1993 to 1998, and assistant professor from 1988 to 1993. Dr. El Rassi commenced his career as a research scientist at Yale University from 1980 to 1988.
Throughout his tenure at Oklahoma State University, Dr. El Rassi has been the director of research for 10 undergraduate students, 11 MS students, 23 PhD students, and nine postdoctoral fellows. As such, his research alongside his students has resulted in more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and 250 presentations, including more than 150 invited lectures at several academic institutions across the globe. In addition, Dr. El Rassi has edited two books regarding carbohydrate analysis by modern separation techniques and has been the editor-in-chief of Electrophoresis since 2004.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. El Rassi pursued an education at Lebanese University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1972 and an additional degree in education in 1973. He subsequently attended Claude-Bernard University Lyon 1 in Lyon, France, receiving a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in 1974 and 1978, respectively. Thereafter, Dr. El Rassi assumed a visiting assistant professorship at École centrale de Lyon for two years.
In an effort to remain aware of changes within his industry, Dr. El Rassi is a member of the permanent scientific committees of the Asia Pacific International Symposium on Microscale Separations, the International Symposium on Capillary Electroseparation Techniques, and the Latin-American Symposium on Biotechnology, Biomedical, Biopharmaceutical and Industrial Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis and Microchip Technology. He also maintains affiliation with the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi. Likewise, Dr. El Rassi is a lifetime member of the American Electrophoresis Society.
In light of his exceptional accomplishments in chemistry and higher education, Dr. El Rassi has accrued numerous accolades throughout his tenure. In 2007, he received the Oklahoma Chemist of the Year Award from the American Chemical Society. In addition, Dr. El Rassi was the recipient of the Oklahoma Scientist of the Year Award from the Oklahoma Academy of Sciences in 2006, the Regents Distinguished Research Award from Oklahoma State University in 2005, and the Sigma Xi Lectureship Award from Oklahoma State University in 2004.
Married to Guadalupe Margarita Davila Huerta since 1980, Dr. El Rassi is the proud father of two children. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening and growing vegetables.
