American Political Scientist David Calleo, Ph.D. Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

After nearly 60 years of experience in academia, Dr. Calleo was appointed University Professor at Johns Hopkins University in 2001. In addition, he served as the Dean Acheson Chair at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he was previously Professor and Director of European Studies, appointed in 1969. He is also an Associate Fellow at Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University in New Haven, CT. In 2004 he was named an advisory professor to East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. Previous roles include twice as a visiting professor at the Institut universitaire de hautes études internationals in Geneva, Switzerland, Enseignant invite at the Instituts d'études politiques in Paris, twice a Project Director for The Twentieth Century Fund, a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in the Federal Republic of Germany, Vice President of the Lehrman Institute, and in 1976-7 a Consultant to the U.S. Department of State's Undersecretary for Political Affairs.

Born in Binghamton, NY, he began his undergraduate career at Yale University, obtaining an undergraduate degree in History, the Arts, and Letters, in 1955. He continued his studies at Yale, completing a Master of Arts in political science in 1957, and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1959. He was an instructor of political science at Brown University in Providence, RI from 1959-1960, an instructor and an assistant professor of political science at Yale University from 1961-1967, a research fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford University from 1966-1967, a Guggenheim Fellow at Oxford from 1966-1967, and a visiting professor at Columbia in 1968.
A respected voice in the field of contemporary European studies, Dr. Calleo was also a George Herbert Walker Bush Fellow of the American Academy in Berlin, and associate at Centre d'études et de recherché internationals in Paris. He taught at the University of Puget Sound from 1991-1992.

Dr. Calleo has been a prolific author and theorist on Europe and its future. He is especially notable for his ability to move across diverse disciplines, particularly economics, history and politics. His publications include Follies of Power, America's Unipolar Fantasy (2009), Rethinking Europe's Future (2001), The Bankrupting of America (1992), Beyond American Hegemony (1987), The Imperious Economy (1982), The German Problem Reconsidered (1978), America and the World Political Economy (1973), The Atlantic Fantasy (1970), The American Political System (1968), Britain's Future (1968), Coleridge & The Idea of the Modern State (1966) and Europe's Future (1965). He served as a contributing editor of Survival: Global Politics & Strategy. He was honored with the Gladys M. Kammerer Award for Best Book Analyzing American National Policy, by the American Political Science Association in 1973.

He is a member of the American Political Science Association, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Metropolitan Club of the City of Washington, the Century Association, International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Literary Society of Washington and the Elizabethan Club, a social club at Yale University. Dr. Calleo was named a trustee of the Jonathan Edwards Trust in 1972.

Married to Avis T. Bohlen, former ambassador to Bulgaria and arms control expert, Prof. Calleo has enjoyed gardening, playing squash, and attending the opera. He spends his summers on the island of Elba in Italy, where he has created a large classical garden.
