Dr. Hartford was inspired to pursue a career in the field by a desire to help nurture the development, growth, and healing of others. He began as a student at Stanford University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences, with distinction, in 1983, followed by a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1983. He continued his studies with Harvard Medical School, completing a Doctor of Medicine in 1992 before joining Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital as an intern until 1993 and Massachusetts General Hospital for a residency and fellowship in radiation oncology from 1993 to 1998. Dr. Hartford also holds a PhD in political economy and government from Harvard University.
A leading voice in the field, Dr. Hartford has been affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the Radiological Society of North America, and numerous state medical societies. He has written creative works such as "First Days of August," which he wrote under the pen name Alan Froning. He has also contributed to multiple articles and scientific reviews that have been featured in prestigious medical journals.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Hartford joined the American Medical Association, honing his expertise through work on committees such as the Council on Ethical & Judicial Affairs, the Council on Long-Range Planning & Development, and the Council on Medical Service and service on the AMA's Board of Trustees. From there, he lent his knowledge of the field to such entities as the Dartmouth School of Medicine, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, and the NRG Oncology Clinical Trials Group.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hartford has been recognized many times for his work in the field, earning Castle Connolly Medical's title of one of America's Top Doctors, and a fellowship with the American College of Radiology, as well as a number of research fellowships with medical institutions. Dr. Hartford is the proud father of his daughter, Anya.
