With more than 30 years of academic experience, Dr. Mohanty has worked at the University of Guelph as the Professor for the Department of Plant Agriculture and is cross-appointed in the School of Engineering since 2008, Premier's Research Chair in Biomaterials and Transportation since 2008, and the Research Leadership Chair since 2017. Additionally, he has been the Director of the Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre (BDDC) since 2008 and the Forest Product Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers since 2007. Prior to these appointments, he was an Associate Professor at Michigan State University from 2003 to 2008. Before that, he was a Visiting Associate Professor at Michigan State University from 2001 to 2003, a Visiting Research Associate at Michigan State University from 2000 to 2001, a Postdoctoral Associate at Iowa State University in 1999, and a senior lecturer in chemistry at B.Z.B Gov't College under Utkal University from 1990 to 1993 and Ravenshaw College (Autonomous) under Utkal University from 1993 to 1997. Dr. Mohanty began his career as a lecturer in chemistry at D.A.V. College under Berhampur University from 1987 to 1990.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Mohanty pursued an education at Ravenshaw College (Autonomous) under Utkal University, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1978. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Science in chemistry focusing on polymer chemistry in 1980, also at Ravenshaw College (Autonomous) under Utkal University. Dr. Mohanty concluded his studies with the school in 1987, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry with a specialization in polymers and natural fibres.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Mohanty has participated in numerous endeavors in his professional circles. He has found much success with his written works, having co-edited "Fiber Technology for Fiber-Reinforced Composites" in 2017, "Biocomposites: Design and Mechanical Performance" in 2015, and, "Handbook of Polymer Nanocomposites" in 2014. He currently serves on the editorial boards for the International Journal of Plastics Technology (since 2013), the Journal of Renewable Materials (since 2013), the International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing – Green Technology (since 2013), and Polimery (since 2013). Previously, Dr. Mohanty was on the editorial boards for the American Institute of Mathematical Sciences Energy from 2014 to 2017, Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from 2013 to 2014, and the Journal of Polymers and Environment from 2013 to 2017.
Dr. Mohanty was the editor-in-chief for the Journal of Biobased Materials and Bioenergy from 2007 to 2014, he has held the title of guest editor for the Proceedings of the International Conference on Natural Fibers—Sustainable Materials for Advanced Applications in 2013 and the Journal of Advances in Mechanical Engineering: Natural Fiber Composites from 2012 to 2013, as well as honorary editor for Advanced Materials Letters from 2010 to 2011. Likewise, he excelled as the editor of "Natural Fibers, Biopolymers and Biocomposites" in 2005, and "Packaging Nanotechnology" in 2009. Dr. Mohanty further contributed multiple articles to esteemed scientific journals.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Mohanty remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the BioEnvironmental Polymer Society (BEPS), the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and the Polymer Processing Society (PPS). Dr. Mohanty is also a member of the American Society for Composites and the American Chemical Society (ACS).
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Mohanty has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. Recently, he was presented with the Research Leadership Chair Award from the University of Guelph in 2017, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the BioEnvironmental Polymer Society in 2015, the Prestigious "Glory of India" (Bharat Jyoti) Award from the India International Friendship Society in 2012, the Gold Medal and Certificate from the International Conference on Composites Interfaces in 2012, and the Jim Hammar Memorial Service Award from the BioEnvironmental Polymer Society in 2011. He was honored as a Highly Prolific Author by the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2017, a Featured Canadian Author in the ACS Publications Open Access Virtual Issue "Hot Materials in a Cool Country" to celebrate the 100th Meeting of the Canadian Chemistry Conference in 2017, Distinguished Visiting Professor at the South China University of Technology from 2011 to 2015, a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung/Foundation from 1998 to 1999, and a Alexander Von Humboldt Fellow of the Technischen Universität Berlin from 1997 to 1999. The recipient of the Andrew Chase Forest Products Division Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2006, Dr. Mohanty has been selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
