In addition to his work in the field, he has held numerous teaching roles, including as a professor at Lan Zhou University Second Hospital since 2010 and as a visiting professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at McGill University since 2014.
From 2012 to 2014, Dr. Akiyama was the director of the UDX Hirahata Clinic, and from 2009 to 2012 he was the director of the Kudan Clinic Immune Cell Therapy Center. He served as executive vice president of Mitsukaido Sakura Hospital from 2007 to 2009, and as physician-in-chief in the Department of Internal Medicine at Saiyu Soka Hospital from 1998 to 2007. Earlier in his career, Dr. Akiyama was the medical chief of aerospace medicine with the National Space Development Agency of Japan from 1996 to 1998. Dr. Akiyama began his career as a student at Sapporo Medical University, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1989. He joined Nikko Memorial Hospital as a resident in internal medicine until 1990, subsequently holding a second internal medicine residency with the Hakodate Red Cross Hospital from 1990 to 1992. From 1992 to 1996, he served in an oncology fellowship with the Sapporo Medical University Fourth Department of Internal Medicine. Later in his career, Dr. Akiyama earned a PhD from Showa University in 2005. In his free time, he enjoys karate, tennis, and astronomy.
