A historian, talented artist, and musician, Mr. Carvalho is currently a historical consultant for Valley Historical Research Services, the owner and manager of Watershops Studio, and is co-editor of the Heritage Book Series, published by The Republican newspaper in Springfield, MA. His career background includes formerly serving as president and executive director of the Springfield Library and Museum Association and director of the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum. Early in his career, Mr. Carvalho taught at Westfield State College (now University) in Massachusetts, where he has served on the board of trustees from 2010 to 2015.
The author of "Struggle for Freedom" in 2013 and "Black Families of Hampden County, Massachusetts: 1650-1865" in 2011, among others, Mr. Carvalho served as an editor and associate editor for a number of publications. He was the executive producer of a video documentary called "The Making of the Dr. Seuss National Memorial" in 2001 following the establishment of the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Park. A recording artist and guitarist who produced multiple recordings for the East of the Sky Orchestra between 2012 to 2015, Mr. Carvalho has co-produced and directed more than 80 music videos throughout his career. He is also a sculptor and works in fired clay and bronze.
Serving on a number of boards during his career, Mr. Carvalho is a longtime member of the New England Museum Association, the American Association of Museums, the Academy of Certified Archivists and the National Genealogical Society. As a member of the National Genealogical Society, he dedicated time as the book review editor for their National Genealogical Society Quarterly from 1987 to 1995. Mr. Carvalho further received a National Award for Advancing Genealogical Research Publications in 1996.
Mr. Carvalho has been honored with an Internet Radio Award by the Eva Cappelli & the Watershops Band in 2009, Video Historical Documentary Award by the New England Historical Association in 1993, and an Excellence in Programming Award by the Cable TV Endowment in 1991, 1992 and 1993. He has additionally obtained a Commendation Award from the American Association for State and Local History in 1989. Mr. Carvalho has been showcased in more than a dozen editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
Born in Kinston, N.C., Mr. Carvalho's childhood included a very musical family. Married to Gayle Elizabeth Conklin since October 1976, he has two children. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Westfield State University, Master of Arts in history from the College of William and Mary and Master of Library Science and Information Science from the University of Rhode Island. Mr. Carvalho is a certified archivist and genealogical records searcher.
