A professor emerita in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures within the College of Liberal and Creative Arts at San Francisco State University since 1998, Dr. Costa-Zalessow taught at the university for 30 years. Beginning her academic career in 1968 as an assistant professor and promoted to full professor in 1979, she later retired as a coordinator of the Italian Programs. Prior to joining the San Francisco faculty, Dr. Costa-Zalessow taught at Mills College in Oakland, CA, for a semester in 1963 and was a teaching assistant at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1959 to 1963.
Dr. Costa-Zalessow has authored and contributed to several books, including "Scrittrici italiane dal XIII al XX secolo, Testi e critica (Women Writers from the Thirteenth to the Twentieth Century, Texts and Criticisms)" and edited "Autobiographical Poems of Francesca Turini Bufalini" as well as "Voice of a Virtuosa and Courtesan: Selected Poems of Margherita Costa (English and Italian Editions, translations by Joan E. Borrelli)." She has also been responsible for organizing the special issue of "Italica," Volume 68, No. 3, in 1998, which was dedicated to the memory of Enrico De Negri, and self-published "Croatian Cooking, My Mother's Old Recipes Adapted for the Modern Kitchen, 1995-2018." Furthermore, she has authored approximately 30 articles in scholarly journals, as well as many more reviews, online articles and contributions to collective anthologies. Dr. Costa-Zalessow is a longtime member of the Modern Language Association, the American Association of Teachers of Italian, the Renaissance Society of America, the Dante Society of America and the Croatian Academy of America.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in Italian in 1959 and Master of Arts in Italian in 1961, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in Romance languages and literature in 1967 at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Costa-Zalessow speaks English, Italian, Spanish, Croatian, German and Russian. She can also read French and Latin. Notably, Dr. Costa-Zalessow received a Gamma Phi Beta Scholarship in 1957 and 1958, a Gamma Phi Beta Scholarship in the fall of 1958, a Herbert H. Vaughan Scholarship in Italian in 1959 and 1960, and an Advanced Graduate Traveling Fellowship in Romance languages and literatures in 1964 and 1965.
During her career, Dr. Costa-Zalessow made three appearances as a guest speaker on television shows. She appeared on the "Roger Boschetti Show" on Channel 20 in 1975, the "Open Studio Program" on KQFD Channel 9 in 1975, and the "Abdon Ugarte Show" on Channel 20 in 1976. She has been showcased in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1997, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. Born in Europe, Dr. Costa-Zalessow later arrived in the United States in 1951 and married her husband, Gustavo Costa, in 1963. She has one daughter, who studied economics and is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
