When he was younger, he loved building and designing, and he was also very interested in architecture. He put the two together to pursue a career in engineering. His entire career was devoted in equal parts to teaching, research and private practice. Earlier in his career, he lent his knowledge of civil engineering to various universities, including The University of New Mexico and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Subsequently, he established Eugene Zwoyer & Associates, was the Founding Director of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering Research Facility, and worked as executive director and COO of the American Society of Civil Engineers, which has been one of the highlights of his career. He has designed or analyzed the structures of more than 600 different buildings and bridges.
Prior to starting in the field, Dr. Zwoyer received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from The University of New Mexico, a Master of Science in civil engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering from the University of Illinois. A registered professional engineer in New Mexico, New York, California and Arizona, he remains aware of changes in the field through his affiliation with the Engineering Societies Commission on Energy, the American Association of Engineering Societies, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Society for Engineering Education. Likewise, he was the recipient of fellowships from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
During the course of his lengthy career, Dr. Zwoyer has lent his knowledge to such articles as "The Role of Engineers in the Present Society," "Ultimate Strength in Shear of Simply-Supported Prestressed Concrete Beams Without Web Reinforcement," and "Parameters Influencing the Airblast Environment Induced by High Explosives." As a testament to his excellence in the field, he has been recognized with the Can-Am Civil Engineering Amity Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Outstanding Engineer of the Year from the Albuquerque chapter of the New Mexico Society for Professional Engineers, and numerous listings in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West. In the coming years, Dr. Zwoyer intends to parlay his knowledge of the field to others while cementing his legacy as a prominent and versatile industry leader.
