Prior to this appointment, she served Medical Mission Sisters as an elected sector coordinator in Africa from 1992 to 1998, general government liaison in Kenya from 1992 to 1998, and senior surgeon at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi from 1981 to 1992. Previously, she held the position a general surgeon with Medical Mission Sisters in Tanzania from 1973 to 1977, South Sudan from 1977 to 1978, Ethiopia in 1978, and Sierra Leone in 1978. Dr. Van Hoyweghen began her career as a surgical resident in New York City from 1966 to 1971.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Van Hoyweghen pursued an education at OLVP Sint-Niklaas, earning a diploma in 1953. She continued her academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine in 1966 at Utrecht University. Following these accomplishments, she obtained a Master of Science in bio-ethics in 1998 from the University of Antwerp. Dr. Van Hoyweghen concluded her studies in 2004 at the Catholic University of Leuven, graduating with a European Master of Bioethics.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Van Hoyweghen has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She has contributed to the City of Cape Town, South Africa, as a pediatric surgeon in 1981. Furthermore, she has maintained involvement with various church hospitals and AIDS support groups. Dr. Van Hoyweghen has also contributed to the Diocesan Committee for Peace and Justice in Antwerp, Belgium.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Van Hoyweghen has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She has been recognized as a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons in 1980, the American College of Surgeons in 1975, the John L. Madden Surgical Society in 1972, COSECSA in 1987, and the East African College of Surgeons since 1996. She was honored by Worldwide Branding as an Industry Expert in 2017 and a Distinguished Worldwide Humanitarian in 2018. Dr. Van Hoyweghen was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
