Dr. Miller is a professor of pharmacy practice at North Dakota State University in Fargo. Teaching on campus since 1978, he also served as chairman of the department for 18 years and was the director of the drug information center for seven years. Currently teaching several courses, including Common Medicines and Diseases, Drug Literature Evaluation, Pharmacotherapy/Rheumatology, and Advanced Practice Rotations, he formerly served as a clinical pharmacist for the Fargo VA Health Care Systems, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs for 11 years. Furthermore, Dr. Miller was a clinical pharmacist for the Dakota Medical Center in Fargo for eight years.
A career whose specialty has been in rheumatology, Dr. Miller has been very active with the American College of Rheumatology, serving on various committees. He has also been a longtime member of the arthritis advisory committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and an expert member of the advisory panel on rheumatology/clinical immunology for the committee on revision for the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention. Serving in numerous local organizations as well, Dr. Miller most recently served on the Board of Directors for the North Central Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, for which he was the chairman of their medical and scientific committee.
Dr. Miller is a longtime manuscript referee for numerous journals. He has worked in that capacity for both the American Journal of Health Systems Pharmacy and Annals of Internal Medicine since 1995. Furthermore, Dr. Miller is a member of the editorial board of Arthritis Today and contributes his own articles to various scholarly journals as well.
An elected fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Dr. Miller was a member of several more professional organizations, including the American Pharmaceutical Association and the North Dakota Pharmacists Association. He currently serves on the Committee on Rheumatologic Care of the American College of Rheumatology. The recipient of multiple grants over the years, including from the SKF Corporation, Ayerst Laboratories and Smith Kline & French, he has also received several awards for his work, beginning in 1979 with a Roche Award from the Canadian Society for Hospital Pharmacists. More recently, Dr. Miller received a Mary J. Berg Educator Award in 2012 and a John Finn Award from the North Central Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation in 2007.
Dr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the University of Manitoba, a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Michigan, a certificate of residency in hospital pharmacy from the University Hospital of Saskatchewan. He is a licensed pharmacist in North Dakota and the Province of Manitoba. Married to his wife, Joan, with whom he raised one son, one of Dr. Miller's favorite pastimes is ballroom dancing.
