A venerated and accomplished engineer and educator, Dr. De Loach has amassed more than six decades of professional experience in his area of expertise. Since 1993, he has been a courtesy professor of engineering sciences at the University of Central Florida, having formerly served as a department head at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, from 1966 to 1989. Prior to these positions, Dr. De Loach held several roles at AT&T Bell Laboratories, including a supervisor from 1963 to 1966 and a technical staff member from 1956 to 1963.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. De Loach pursued a formal education at Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in physics in 1951 and 1952, respectively. He subsequently attended The Ohio State University, graduating in 1956 with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics. Likewise, Dr. De Loach has been the author of myriad technical papers in the field, has frequently lectured on engineering, and holds several patents.
In light of his exceptional achievements in engineering, Dr. De Loach has been the recipient of a plethora of accolades. A Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the organization awarded him with the David Sarnoff Medal in 1975 and the Engineering Excellence Medal in 1993. In addition, he was elected as a university Fellow of Ohio State University in 1955, and was honored with the Stuart Ballantine Medal from the Franklin Society in 1975 and the Vladimir Karapetoff Award from Eta Kappa Nu in 2003. Furthermore, Dr. De Loach was an esteemed member of Sigma Pi Sigma, Pi Mu Epsilon, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.
The highlight of Dr. De Loach's career was when he was working on a high capacity millimeter wave communications system during his appointment at Crawford Hill Laboratories. This system had been developed since the 1930's and was actually abandoned after Dr. De Loach changed positions due to the lack of viable millimeter wave transmitters. Later at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, he discovered a way to complete the project. As a result of his achievement, a commercial system was produced. Later on, Dr. De Loach delved into the field of fiber optics and led the development of a viable semiconductor laser transmitter to enable fiber optic communication systems which are employed so widely today.
