Dr. Tucker served as professor of English in the Brooklyn Center and C.W. Post campuses of Long Island University (LIU). Teaching in this capacity since 1968, he served as department chair between 1976 and 1982 and was an instructor and associate professor between 1956 and 1968. He also spent 41 years as the editor of "Confrontation Magazine: A Literary Journal" from 1968 to 2009. Earlier in his career, Dr. Tucker was a feature writer and report for the New Mexico Newspaper from 1956 to 1958, reporter for the Associated Press from 1954 to 1956, associate editor for Quick Frozen Foods Magazine from 1952 to 1954, and writer for Transradio Press from 1950 to 1952.
A writer and editor of many publications, Dr. Tucker most recently authored "Boundaries of Exile/Conditions of Hope" in 2009, "Plenty of Exits" in 2008, and "While There is Time" in 2005. Dr. Tucker currently chairs the Sarasota-Manatee Association of Phi Beta Kappa. He has lectured for 16 years on the topic of literature and life at Selby Library in Sarasota beginning in 2002 and was a distinguished visiting professor at Florida International University during 2000. He has been active as a member of the British University Summer Schools Program and the Florida Regents Committee, as well as the Modern Language Association, the African Studies Association, the African Literary Association and the Authors Guild, among other professional organizations.
The recipient of a Chancellor's Award from LIU in 2006, Dr. Tucker was one of only six people to ever receive the honor. He also received a Trustee's Award from the university in 1981 and a Meritorious Service Award from New York University (NYU) in 1980, as well as several grants and fellowships. He has been showcased in Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East. Completing a Bachelor of Arts at NYU in 1949, Master of Arts at the University of Arizona in 1954, and Doctor of Philosophy at NYU in 1963, Dr. Tucker was known for serving as the managing editor of one of his college newspapers and as the editor of his high school newspaper.
