Dr. Keyes has been working in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, as the director of the Extreme Computing Research Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) since 2013. Beginning his career at the university in 2009 when it was founded, he served as the dean of the division of mathematics and computer science for three years. Working at the algorithmic interface between parallel computing and the numerical analysis of partial differential equations across a spectrum of aerodynamic, geophysical and chemically reacting flows, Dr. Keyes has a background in engineering, applied mathematics and computer science with consulting experience in both industry and national laboratories.
Entering academia in 1984 as a research associate in the department of computer science at Yale University, Dr. Keyes remained at the prestigious university for 10 years, working his way up to associate professor in the department of mechanical engineering from 1990 to 1994. While still teaching at Yale, he accepted a position as an associate professor in the department of computer science at Old Dominion University in 1993. He later became the Richard F. Barry chair professor of mathematics and statistics, chairman of the mathematics department and director of the Center for Computational Science in 2001. In 2003, Dr. Keyes accepted an appointment at Columbia University in New York City, where he spent another eight years as the Fu Foundation professor of applied mathematics in the department of applied physics and applied mathematics. He remains an adjunct professor at Columbia University, from which he took leave to help found KAUST.
During his career, Dr. Keyes was a visiting scientist and senior researcher at the Institute of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering in Hampton, VA, and acting director of the Institute for Scientific Computing Research at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has contributed more than 200 articles to scientific journals or proceedings, was an editor of several volumes of the book series "Domain Decomposition Methods in Science and Engineering," co-editor of the "International Journal of High Performance Computer Applications," a founding member of the editorial board for the "Springer Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering" and a founding editor of the Computational Science and Engineering book series of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
A fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Mathematical Society, Dr. Keyes has also been active as a member of several other professional organizations. Notably, he has served as council member and chair for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and as secretary, council member and vice president-at-large for the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Responsible for championing several mathematical algorithms that have since become widely used by computational scientists and engineers, Dr. Keyes has also been the recipient of several awards for his work. Most recently, he received a Distinguished Service to the Profession Award from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2011. He was also recognized with the Sidney Fernbach Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society in 2007, a Gordon Bell Prize from the Association for Computing Machinery in 1999, Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1989, as well as multiple teaching prizes from Columbia University, Harvard University and Yale University. He has been showcased in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Following in the footsteps of his mother, who was a university librarian, Dr. Keyes always knew that he wanted to teach. However, the opportunity to found and place a contemporary imprint on the curriculum, research fabric and faculty composition of a new university was beyond his dreams until KAUST engaged him at its charter. In 1978, he received a Bachelor of Science in aerospace and mechanical engineering, summa cum laude, at Princeton University. He then completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in applied mathematics at Harvard University in 1979 and 1984, respectively.
