Immersing himself in his faith, Dr. Whittaker has served as a minister for his entire career. He was inspired by the leaders in his own local church as well as by other church leaders. Originally planning on becoming a civil engineer, he realized he was meant to follow the call of the Lord and preach the Gospel. Dr. Whittaker was ordained a Southern Baptist minister in 1964.
Dr. Whittaker earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western Kentucky University in 1965. He then received a Master of Divinity in 1969, followed by a Doctor of Ministry in 1974, both from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, KY. Most recently, Dr. Whittaker obtained a Master of Arts from Union College in 2004.
Dr. Whittaker has preached at multiple locations, serving as pastor at Jackson Grove Baptist Church in Warren County, KY, from 1964 to 1969. He has served as pastor of First Baptist Church locations in Sturgis, KY, from 1969 to 1976 and Murray, KY, from 1976 to 1982. Dr. Whittaker also completed missionary work in the Philippines with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1983 to 1986.
Additionally, Dr. Whittaker held the position of pastor for the Downtown Baptist Church in Orlando, FL, from 1986 to 1988. He was the president of the Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Pineville, KY, from 1988 to 2007. Most recently, Dr. Whittaker served as pastor of the Glasgow Baptist Church in Kentucky from 2007 to 2010.
Kindhearted and compassionate, Dr. Whittaker lends his time to multiple organizations in need of his leadership. He has been a board member on the Coalition for the Homeless for the Central Florida YMCA in Orlando, FL, from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Whittaker also holds membership with the Kentucky Baptist Historical Society as well as serves as a board moderator for the Liberty Association of Baptists.
Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Whittaker has been named a member of the Southern Baptist Convention executive committee from 2010 to 2014 and Kiwanis International, serving as president of the Pineville chapter from 1994 to 1995 and the District 6 lieutenant governor from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Whittaker served as president of the Kentucky Baptist Convention in 1980.
True to his occupation as a minister, Dr. Whittaker strives to share his knowledge any way he can. He has written "Preparing to Preach," as well as co-wrote "It Only Happens to Preachers." He has lent his time and talents to the Western Recorder newspaper, writing as a columnist from 1988 to 2007. Furthermore, Dr. Whittaker edited publications of the Twentieth Century Kentucky Baptist Biographies.
Over the course of his long career, Dr. Whittaker considers being elected president of the Kentucky Baptist Convention and being president of the Clear Creek Baptist Bible College personal and professional highlights. He is grateful for his wife, Rebecca Kaye Howard, and their three children: Karen, Mary and John. John, like his father, is a pastor and serves in Franklin, KY. As a testament to his excellence, Dr. Whittaker has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Religion and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
