Dr. Billaud holds the position of Professor of Music at New River Community College. Since accepting her appointment as adjunct instructor in 2001, she has transferred her passion for music into dynamic courses in music history, music appreciation, jazz history and music fundamentals, ranging from lecture-based, distance education, and dual-enrollment courses. Prior to her tenure, she taught at Radford University for two years (1997-1999) following a graduate assistantship and received great satisfaction from the accomplishments of her piano students.
As a pianist, Louise Billaud studied in the United States and France under the guidance of her husband, French-born American Professor Emeritus and Steinway artist Jean-Paul Billaud. Through him she felt the traditions of his own teachers: Marguerite Long, Jacques Février, Alfred Cortot and Polish pianist Auguste de Radwan. She acknowledges her husband as the source of inspiration for her own teaching and academic and musical accomplishments.
She earned a Bachelor of Music (magna cum laude) in Piano Performance from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, a Master of Arts degree from Radford University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University.
A laureate of several piano competitions, Louise Billaud received First Prize in the Maxim Shapiro Memorial Piano Competition, Second Prize in the International Piano Recording Competition, First Prize in the Bartok-Kabalevsky International Piano Competition and was an American Prize semi-finalist as well as semi-finalist in the International Web Concert Hall Competition. She has performed in the United States and Europe in solo and lecture-recitals and as soloist with orchestra. Her recordings include three compact discs featuring music from the Baroque period through the modern era and a DVD lecture-recital Mazeppa – An Inspirational Living Legend, which reveals the ties between art, history, literature, politics and music in 19th century Paris with the uniting central figure of Mazeppa, the legendary 17th century Cossack Hetman.
Louise Billaud gave the première performance of the four-movement Sonata for Piano by American composer Kent Holliday written for and dedicated to her. Her presentation in a lecture-recital format of Incantations from the Popol Vuh also by Holliday was enthusiastically received at the College Music Society International Conference in Zagreb, Croatia.
In academia, she was the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia and received the Award for Exemplary Performance from Radford University. Following her doctoral degree in 2014, she was honored by the National Association for Music Education Adult and Community Music Education Special Research Interest Group with the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. The Music Teachers National Association recognized her teaching accomplishments with the lifetime recognition as a National Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM). Dr. Billaud has been cited in close to 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
Chosen as keynote speaker for the Virginia Community College System's New Faculty Forum and for Education Symposia, Dr. Billaud appreciates the opportunity to share with others her passion for music and experience in education, believing that her life's journey can be summed up by quoting the musical signature of Johann Sebastian Bach: Soli Deo Gloria, to God alone be the glory.
