With more than 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Biller is now a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Rhode Island where he has taught since 1970. He previously served as an assistant professor of psychology at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University from 1969 to 1970. Dr. Biller began his career as an assistant professor of psychology at University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1967 to 1969. He also maintained a limited consultative private practice in Warwick, Rhode Island from 1970 to 2013.
In addition to his primary responsibilities as a professor, Dr. Biller has worked as a consultant for Communities for People from 1997 to 1998, The Fogarty Center from 1982 to 1997, St. Joseph's Center for Family Clinical Services from 1993 to 1994, the Newport County Regional Special Education Program from 1993 to 1994, and the Elmwood Community Center from 1992 to 1993. He also consulted at The Arc of Northern Rhode Island from 1980 to 1983, the Northern Rhode Island Community Mental Health Center, Inc., from 1980 to 1982, the Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital from 1970 to 1980, and the Providence VA Medical Center from 1972 to 1976. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Biller was a consultant for the Newport County Community Mental Health Center from 1970 to 1971, Cape Cod Mental Health Clinic in 1970, the Protestant Youth Center in Baldwinville, MA, in 1969, and the Department of Transitional Assistance in Northampton, MA, from 1968 to 1969.
Dr. Biller lost his father before age six, was considered a wayward child, attending seven schools between the seventh and twelfth grades without receiving a diploma, but nevertheless was accepted to Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1962. He concluded his studies at Duke University in 1967, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology). Dr. Biller was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Brown and to Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, at Duke.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Biller has written more than two dozen books. His most recent book is "Headstrong Street Kid to Hopeful Athlete, Playful Dad and Grateful Scholar" (2018). Other books include: "Creative Fitness: Applying Health Psychology and Exercise Science to Everyday Life" (2002), "Fathers and Families: Paternal Factors in Child Development" (1993), "Child Maltreatment and Paternal Deprivation: A Manifesto for Research, Prevention, and Treatment" (1986), "Parental Death and Psychological Development" (1982), "The Other Helpers: Paraprofessionals and Nonprofessionals in Mental Health" (1977), "Father Power" (1974), "Paternal Deprivation: Family Armor, School, Sexuality and Society" (1974) and "Father, Child and Sex Role" (1971).
He has also co-authored "The Power of Hope: Overcoming Your Most Daunting Life Difficulties-No Matter What" (2010), "Hope in the Age of Anxiety" (2009), "The Father Factor: What You Need to Know to Make a Difference" (1994) and "Stature and Stigma: The Biopsychosocial Development of Short Males" (1987). An advisory board member for the Men's Health Network since 1998, Dr. Biller was on the editorial board for the Archives of Sexual Behavior from 1975 to 1997, for Sex Roles from 1979 to 1997 and the Archives of Sexual Behavior from 1975 to 2000, and for Family Relations from 1980 to 1981, as well as a contributor of scores of articles to professional journals, and dozens of chapters in edited books.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Biller has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology. He was also honored as a U.S. Public Health Service Fellow and was awarded a National Institute of Mental Health Dissertation Grant at Duke University. He was invited to appear before the House of Representatives and Senate Congressional Committees and twice to the White House regarding his pioneering research relating to the impact of fathering. But more importantly, from his personal perspective, he has five grown children, and eight grandchildren, the love of his girlfriend and her daughter, and is exceptionally fit as he approaches his ninth decade. Dr. Biller was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East.
