Dr. John chairs several key hospital committees such as the Credentials Committee as well as the Inpatient Value Stream, which uses lean management principles to improve healthcare. As a result, this committee has helped to reduce inpatient length of stay from around seven days to 4.3 days.
Recently, Dr. John receive a grant for the Veterans Health Administration Central Office to set up a new clinical program called "Hospital in Home," which is a home-based alternative to inpatient admission for selected medical conditions. Though his career is still in its early stages, he has contributed his knowledge to a number of key peer-reviewed articles and clinical abstracts, and has led or participated in over a hundred quality improvement projects and initiatives. These include innovations to reduce the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), curbing the overuse of medications such as proton pump inhibitors, and myriad projects to improve patient flow in the hospital including the first peer-reviewed publication describing the use of a discharge lounge.
A Certified Physician Executive through the American Association of Physician Leaders, Dr. John earned his medical degree though Government Medical College, Thiruvanathapuram, one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in India. Dr. John completed his residency at State University of New York-Upstate Medical University, and chief residency at Syracuse VA Medical Center. He graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a Master of Medical Management degree at Heinz College of Information System and Public Policy in 2018, and is a Certified Lean Green Belt. Looking ahead, Dr. John intends to continue to make a difference in the lives of his patients- both at an individual and collective level, just as his siblings, parents and grandmother have done before him.
