Coming from a long line of doctors and hard workers, Dr. Keenan boasts nearly 50 years of experience in the medical profession. He was inspired to pursue the field by many people in his family, including his older brother, who became a physician while Dr. Keenan was in high school; his grandfather, who grew up during the Great Depression; and his parents, who always encouraged him to work hard and pursue his dreams. In his family, five out of his eight siblings have become doctors. Before embarking on his medical career, Dr. Keenan worked as a caddie as a child, and caddied in the PGA tournament. Through the caddie program, he and his two brothers received full college scholarships. Dr. Keenan holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota and is a diplomate through the American Board of Family Medicine. He began his career as a family physician at Shakopee Medical Center in Minnesota. Throughout his career, he has held positions such as a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School and a consultant for Palm Oil and Niacin. Today, he serves as an emergency room physician for multiple hospitals in Southern Minnesota.
Civically, Dr. Keenan helped to develop and eventually served as the president of the American Academy of Home Care Physicians. He has also done research in preventive cardiology, through which he was able to confirm that beta-gluten has cholesterol-lowering effects. As a testament to his achievements in the field, Dr. Keenan received the Researcher of the Year Award and was named among the Best Doctors in America. Ultimately, Dr. Keenan attributes his many professional successes to his mother, who was the biggest source of motivation in his life and pushed him to do his best. He was also greatly influenced by Carol Bland, who helped him receive teaching grants and helped to set him on his career path.
