With more than 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Murrell is an art teacher with New York City Housing and at the Fort Green Senior Citizens Center. In addition, he is a Queens Community House visual artist and painter. Renowned for his artwork, he has been featured in multiple one-person shows, including at the Barbados Consulate, the Jamaica Art Center, the Park House Gallery, the Savacou Gallery and Sonzi's Gallery. In addition, he has had his work exhibited in the Crossroads Theatre Art Gallery and with the Flushing Art League. Earlier in his career, Mr. Murrell was a set designer for the Caribbean Theater Workshop, and he has served as an art consultant with the Caribbean African American Council of New York.
Mr. Murrell was encouraged by his parents to pursue a career in the arts upon discovering his talent for drawing at the age of 3. He began his career studying under his mentor, Clifford Hobbs, in Barbados, and he was further inspired by Hector Whistler. Upon relocating to the United States, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City under a scholarship, and he later earned a diploma from the Pels School of Art.
With a lifelong passion for the fine arts, Mr. Murrell has been recognized throughout his career for his contributions. He was named a National Unsung Hero of Barbados and he received the Fulton Art Fair Award. He received Second Prize for his oil paintings from the Flushing Art League, and the Council Barbadian Organization of New York gave him an Achievement Award. Mr. Murrell has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in the East. In his free time, he enjoys dancing, reading, swimming and singing.
