A former management and marketing educator, Dr. Hilgert retired in 2004 as an associate professor at Northern Arizona University after teaching on campus for 12 years. A former sponsored research analyst at California State University in Los Angeles between 1989 and 1990, she also spent five years with The Claremont Graduate University in California, first as a research associate of the executive management program from 1984 to 1985 and then as an administrator of the program from 1985 to 1989.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Hilgert recognized the need for better management as a devoted businesswoman. A former partner of Durawood Shasta Pacific Industries from 1971 to 1978 and owner and manager of Homefront Home Improvement Stores from 1975 to 1978, both located in Chico, CA, she ultimately made the decision to go back to school to become better educated on the topic. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics and management at the University of Redlands in 1982, followed by a Master of Business Administration in management and marketing in the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University in 1984, she later completed a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in center educational studies at The Claremont Graduate University in 1991 and 1992, respectively.
In addition to teaching in the classroom, Dr. Hilgert was a member of faculty development in international business at the University of South Carolina and a member of faculty development in international marketing with Thunderbird. She is also a former textbook reviewer for McGraw-Hill Publishing Company who has contributed multiple articles to various scholarly journals in her area of expertise and continues to serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Business Administration since 1988.
A longstanding member of the Academy of International Business, the Center for the Study of Intellectual Development and the Friends of the Nonquit Street Neighborhood Association, among others, Dr. Hilgert is also a member and chairman of the Arizona Distance Learning Association and a member and Teaching Excellence Award recipient of the Academy of Business Administration. In retirement, Dr. Hilgert remains active as a longtime participant of the Rio Colorado Commission in Yuma, AZ, since 1993 and as a Sunday School primary teacher.
A 1980 Elizabeth Malpass Scholar through the Zonta Club of the Redlands and a 1981 Economics Scholar through the Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation, Dr. Hilgert was also a State of California Graduate Fellow from 1982 to 1984. She has been included in nearly a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
