Additionally, he has been a research professor at the University of Tennessee since 1995 and a consultant for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C. since 1991. Prior to these roles, Dr. Fontana was a consultant at the United States Department of Energy from 1986 to 1989, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1979 to 1981, and the Atomic Energy Commission from 1972 to 1973.
A registered engineer, Dr. Fontana's work in the state of Tennessee has been extensive. He was a group leader for Advanced Concepts from 1993 to 1994 and an assistant to the director of the engineering technology division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1990 to 1992. He was the director of nuclear safety technology at IT Corp. and Tenera L.P. in Knoxville, TN from 1985 to 1990 and the vice president of engineering at EnergX in Oak Ridge, TN from 1984 to 1985. Other past roles of Dr. Fontana include director of industry degraded core program at Technology for Energy Corp. in Knoxville, TN from 1981 to 1984.
Previously, Dr. Fontana has held the positions of instructor at Purdue University from 1964 to 1965 and senior scientist at the Avco Research and Advanced Development in Wilmington, MA from 1963 to 1964. Throughout his years of work, he has not only contributed more than 100 reports and articles to various journals and publications, but he has also acquired numerous patents for a method of arc synthesis of uranium carbide from UF6 and graphite. Dr. Fontana considers this achievement to be the highlight of his impressive career.
Dr. Fontana has spent a significant amount of time at Oak Ridge National Laboratory over the years. His first professional position with them was as a member of the research staff from 1957 to 1963 and again from 1965 to 1981. Following this term, Dr. Fontana took the posts of an assistant director of nuclear safety research from 1968 to 1972 and as head of advanced concepts development in the engineering technology division from 1972 to 1981, both at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Pursuing academics, Dr. Fontana never set out directly on a path of engineering, but one thing led to another and he found himself in the field. At the University of Massachusetts, he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1955. He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a Master of Science in 1957. Ultimately, Dr. Fontana earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University in 1968.
In addition to serving as chairman of the nuclear reactor safety division of the American Nuclear Society from 1972 to 1973 and in 1994, Dr. Fontana also holds membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rotary International, Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi. Moreover, he is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society. Dr. Fontana has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
